Politics – Congress Leader Raises Concerns Over Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Contest
Politics – Growing tensions within the ruling alliance in Jharkhand have intensified ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, with senior Congress leader Pradeep Balmuchu alleging the possibility of political bargaining and hidden coordination between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The former Jharkhand Congress president questioned the BJP’s confidence in contesting one of the two Rajya Sabha seats despite lacking sufficient numbers in the state Assembly. His remarks come amid increasing speculation surrounding the political calculations of both ruling and opposition parties before the June elections.
Questions Raised Over Second Rajya Sabha Seat
Pradeep Balmuchu claimed that discussions around the second Rajya Sabha seat indicate the possibility of an undisclosed political understanding between the BJP and JMM. According to him, the BJP would not normally consider entering the contest without some form of external support.
He also referred to reports suggesting that Parimal Nathwani, who serves as Director of Corporate Affairs at Reliance Industries Limited and is known to be close to industrialist Mukesh Ambani, could emerge as a possible candidate backed by the BJP.
Balmuchu stated that if the BJP is preparing to field a nominee despite the numbers being unfavourable, it raises questions about possible political coordination behind the scenes. He further said he would oppose Nathwani’s entry into the Rajya Sabha from Jharkhand.
Congress Claims Stronger Position in Alliance
The Congress leader argued that the current political arithmetic gives the Congress a legitimate claim to the second Rajya Sabha seat. He maintained that the JMM is naturally positioned to secure one seat due to its numerical advantage, while the remaining seat should rightfully go to Congress within the Mahagathbandhan alliance.
According to Balmuchu, the JMM would require around 29 votes to comfortably elect its own candidate, leaving only a limited number of surplus votes. He pointed out that Congress currently has 16 MLAs in the Assembly and therefore deserves consideration for the second seat.
The remarks reflect growing unease within the alliance over seat-sharing arrangements and representation in the Upper House of Parliament.
Allegations Over Previous Rajya Sabha Decisions
Balmuchu also accused the JMM of sidelining Congress during earlier Rajya Sabha elections. He alleged that on multiple occasions, Congress lost opportunities despite having a reasonable claim based on legislative strength.
He referred to earlier decisions involving senior JMM leaders and candidates, including Shibu Soren, Mahua Maji, and Sarfaraz Ahmed. According to Balmuchu, those nominations reduced Congress’s chances of securing representation in the Rajya Sabha over the years.
The Congress veteran suggested that the current situation is different because the ruling alliance now holds a stronger majority in the Assembly compared to previous election cycles.
Political Numbers Ahead of the Election
The Rajya Sabha elections for two seats from Jharkhand are expected to take place in June. One seat became vacant following the death of veteran JMM leader Shibu Soren last year, while the second seat will open after the completion of BJP leader Deepak Prakash’s tenure.
At present, the Hemant Soren-led ruling alliance commands a clear majority in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly with 56 legislators. The JMM remains the largest partner with 34 MLAs, while Congress has 16 members. The Rashtriya Janata Dal holds four seats, and CPI (ML) has two legislators.
On the opposition side, the National Democratic Alliance has 24 seats in total. The BJP accounts for 21 MLAs, while the remaining seats belong to allies including AJSU, JD(U), and LJP, along with one Independent member.
As political negotiations continue, attention is now focused on how alliance partners will finalise candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha contest and whether internal differences within the ruling bloc will deepen further.
