Railways – Ujjaini Express Coaches Damaged During Yard Movement in Rishikesh

Railways – Three coaches of the Ujjaini Express were damaged late Monday night after the train derailed while being shifted to a railway yard near the Khand Gaon area of Rishikesh. Officials confirmed that no passengers were inside the train at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported.

Railways ujjaini express yard derailment

Incident Took Place Near Yog Nagri Station

According to railway authorities, the derailment occurred around 9:40 pm close to Yog Nagri railway station when the train was being moved through the yard section. The Ujjaini Express operates between Lakshmibai Nagar in Indore and Yog Nagri Rishikesh.

Officials said the coaches left the tracks during a shunting movement inside the railway premises. Since the train was not in passenger service at that moment, the situation did not pose any risk to travelers.

Collision With Buffer Triggered Damage

Preliminary information shared by railway sources indicated that the locomotive hit the buffer stop positioned at the end of the shunting line. The impact reportedly created strong pressure on the attached coaches, leading to the derailment.

As a result of the collision, one coach was pushed completely off the tracks while another suffered structural bending in the middle section. Railway personnel stated that three coaches sustained visible damage during the incident.

Railway Teams Began Immediate Inspection

Soon after the derailment was reported, railway officials and technical teams reached the site to inspect the affected coaches and track area. Restoration work and a detailed examination of the yard infrastructure were initiated to assess the exact cause of the mishap.

Authorities have not yet announced whether the damaged coaches will require major repairs or replacement. Railway engineers are also expected to review operational procedures followed during the train movement inside the yard.

No Disruption to Passenger Services Reported

Officials confirmed that the derailment occurred within the yard area and did not directly affect regular passenger movement near the station. Since the train was empty during the shunting operation, railway services for travelers remained largely unaffected.

Railway staff continued monitoring the site overnight to ensure safe clearance of the damaged coaches and restoration of normal yard activity. An internal inquiry is likely to determine whether technical failure, operational error, or track-related issues contributed to the incident.

Focus on Railway Yard Safety

The derailment has once again drawn attention to safety measures followed during shunting and maintenance operations in railway yards. Such movements are considered sensitive because trains are handled within limited track space and near terminal points.

Railway officials stated that all necessary safety checks would be carried out before affected equipment is returned to service. Further updates are expected after completion of the technical investigation.
