Governance – Karnataka Opposition Intensifies Pressure Over Tender Probe Report
Governance – Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R. Ashoka, on Thursday escalated his criticism of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, demanding that the state government immediately release the findings of a committee formed to examine alleged violations in the tender process related to Bengaluru’s waste management project. Ashoka argued that transparency requires the report to be placed before the public without delay so citizens can assess the facts independently.

Demand for Public Disclosure
The latest exchange follows a heated political confrontation that began after allegations surfaced regarding large-scale financial irregularities in the city’s waste management tender process. Earlier, Shivakumar had strongly rejected the accusations and accused Ashoka of supporting interests linked to what he described as a “garbage mafia.” He also alleged that the opposition was attempting to politicize the issue rather than contribute constructively.
Responding to those remarks, Ashoka said he was acting on behalf of the people of Karnataka and fulfilling his constitutional responsibilities as Leader of Opposition. He maintained that questioning the government’s decisions was part of democratic accountability and not an effort to serve any vested interests.
Political Tensions Continue
Ashoka further claimed that the Congress government was uncomfortable with the aggressive scrutiny it has faced since assuming office. According to him, the opposition has consistently raised concerns about governance issues from the beginning of the administration’s tenure.
The BJP leader also pointed to what he described as growing dissatisfaction within the ruling party. He alleged that several Congress legislators have publicly expressed concerns and repeatedly approached the party leadership in New Delhi regarding internal matters.
Transparency Claims Questioned
Taking aim at the government’s repeated assurances regarding openness and clean administration, Ashoka questioned whether the leadership was genuinely committed to transparency. He noted that a high-level committee had been constituted to investigate the allegations and was given a specific timeframe to submit its findings.
According to Ashoka, releasing the report would help remove doubts and allow the public to understand whether proper procedures were followed. He argued that withholding the findings would only deepen suspicions surrounding the tender process.
Allegations Linked to Waste Management Project
The controversy centers on the proposed Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) project for Bengaluru. Earlier this week, Ashoka called for an independent investigation into the tender process and urged authorities to conduct a time-bound inquiry into the allegations.
The issue has attracted significant political attention because it represents one of the first major corruption-related accusations levelled by the BJP against the Congress-led state government after its formation.
Ashoka has alleged that the project involves financial irregularities on a massive scale. He claimed that the total project value is approximately Rs 36,500 crore and alleged that kickbacks amounting to nearly Rs 10,000 crore were involved. The government, however, has rejected these allegations and defended its actions.
BJP Seeks Wider Investigation
The matter gained further momentum when a BJP delegation led by Ashoka met Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and submitted a memorandum seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the project.
In its representation, the delegation requested a detailed investigation into the tender process and alleged financial improprieties. BJP leaders also called for strict action if any wrongdoing is established through an official inquiry.
Awaiting Official Findings
With both the ruling party and the opposition standing firmly by their positions, attention is now focused on the committee report and any future investigation that may follow. Political observers believe the release of the findings could play a significant role in shaping the debate over transparency, governance, and accountability in Karnataka’s administration.
