Heatwave – Delhi-NCR Braces for Relentless Heat as IMD Extends Alert
Heatwave – Delhi and nearby regions are preparing for another spell of intense heat after the India Meteorological Department warned that severe weather conditions are likely to continue over the next several days.

Residents across Delhi-NCR witnessed one of the hottest days of the season on Monday as temperatures climbed close to 44 degrees Celsius in multiple parts of the capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued a yellow alert, cautioning people about continuing heatwave conditions expected between May 19 and May 22.
Temperatures Continue to Rise Across the Capital
Data released by the weather office showed that Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory, which serves as the city’s primary monitoring centre, recorded a maximum temperature of 43.4 degrees Celsius. This marked the highest temperature registered in the city so far this month.
Meteorologists said dry weather, harsh sunlight, and persistent hot winds are contributing to the sharp rise in temperatures. Officials warned that outdoor conditions during the afternoon could become increasingly uncomfortable and may pose health risks for people exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.
Hot Winds Expected During Daytime Hours
According to the latest forecast, the maximum temperature on May 19 is expected to remain around 44 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may stay near 28 degrees Celsius. Strong surface winds carrying hot air are likely to affect several parts of the region during the afternoon and evening.
Weather officials have advised people to minimise unnecessary outdoor movement during peak daytime hours. Authorities also stressed the importance of taking precautions against dehydration and heat-related illnesses as the ongoing weather conditions could impact vulnerable groups more severely.
Little Relief Likely Until Midweek
The IMD stated that there is no immediate sign of significant relief on May 20 either. Daytime temperatures are again expected to hover near 44 degrees Celsius, with minimum temperatures likely to remain around 27 degrees Celsius.
Experts noted that the continuing rise in night temperatures is reducing the chances of relief after sunset. Warm nights combined with daytime heat are expected to increase discomfort levels for residents across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Ghaziabad, and nearby areas.
On May 21, temperatures may dip slightly, but heatwave conditions are expected to continue through the afternoon and evening. The forecast suggests a maximum temperature close to 43 degrees Celsius and a minimum near 27 degrees Celsius.
Humidity Levels Adding to Public Discomfort
Apart from the soaring temperatures, fluctuating humidity levels are also expected to make weather conditions more uncomfortable. Officials estimate humidity may remain between 35 and 50 percent over the coming days, increasing the feeling of stickiness and fatigue.
The weather department further said similar conditions are likely to persist on May 22, with hot and dry winds continuing throughout the day. Although skies are expected to remain mostly clear, the prolonged exposure to heat could increase the risk of exhaustion and heatstroke.
Slight Improvement Possible After May 23
Meteorologists indicated that a gradual shift in weather patterns may begin from May 23 onward. While no major rainfall activity has been predicted immediately, temperatures could begin easing slightly as atmospheric conditions change.
Until then, authorities are encouraging residents to remain cautious and follow health advisories issued during the heatwave period.
Doctors Advise Extra Care During Heatwave
Medical professionals have urged children, elderly citizens, and people with existing health conditions to remain especially careful during the ongoing heat spell. Doctors recommend drinking sufficient water throughout the day, avoiding direct sunlight, and reducing strenuous outdoor activities whenever possible.
Health experts also advised people to wear light clothing, stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of heat exhaustion or dehydration appear.
