Diplomacy – Modi Set for Landmark Norway Visit and Nordic Summit Talks
Diplomacy – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in Norway on Monday for the third India-Nordic Summit, marking a significant step in India’s growing engagement with the Nordic region. The visit is expected to focus on trade expansion, sustainable technologies, innovation, and strengthening long-term strategic cooperation between India and Nordic countries.

First Visit by an Indian Prime Minister in Over Four Decades
This will be Narendra Modi’s first official visit to Norway and also the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 43 years. During the visit, he is expected to meet Norway’s King Harald V and Queen Sonja, while also holding formal bilateral discussions with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
The meetings are expected to review ongoing cooperation between the two countries and identify new areas for partnership. Officials have indicated that discussions will largely revolve around economic collaboration, climate-focused innovation, maritime sectors, and investment opportunities.
Focus on Trade, Technology and Investment
Prime Minister Modi is also set to participate in the India-Norway Business and Research Summit alongside his Norwegian counterpart. The event is expected to bring together policymakers, researchers, and business leaders from both countries to discuss innovation-led growth and industrial cooperation.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the visit will help accelerate progress in bilateral relations, particularly in areas linked to trade and investment. India is looking to deepen cooperation under the India-European Free Trade Association Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, with special attention on clean energy, green technologies, and the blue economy sector.
The ministry noted that bilateral trade between India and Norway reached nearly USD 2.73 billion in 2024. In addition, Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global has invested close to USD 28 billion in Indian capital markets, underlining Norway’s growing financial engagement with India.
India-Nordic Summit Scheduled in Oslo
The third India-Nordic Summit is scheduled to take place in Oslo on May 19, 2026. The gathering will bring together leaders from five Nordic nations along with Prime Minister Modi.
The summit will include Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, Iceland’s Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
The summit format has become an important platform for India’s engagement with Northern Europe. Earlier editions of the summit were held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022.
Strategic Cooperation Expected to Expand
Officials believe this year’s summit will give fresh momentum to India’s ties with Nordic countries across several strategic sectors. Discussions are likely to cover renewable energy, digital innovation, sustainability initiatives, defence cooperation, Arctic policy, advanced technologies, and space collaboration.
India has increasingly sought stronger partnerships with Nordic nations due to their leadership in clean energy systems, climate research, smart manufacturing, and innovation-driven economies. Nordic countries, meanwhile, see India as a major economic partner with expanding market opportunities and growing technological capabilities.
The Ministry of External Affairs also highlighted that India’s trade with Nordic countries collectively touched nearly USD 19 billion in 2024. The government expects the summit to contribute towards building more resilient supply chains and improving investment flows between India and Europe.
The upcoming discussions are also being viewed as important in the context of broader India-Europe economic engagement, especially as negotiations related to trade and economic partnerships continue to gain momentum.
