Rescue – Punjab Child Pulled Alive From Borewell After Overnight Operation
Rescue – A three-year-old boy was safely brought out of a deep borewell after rescuers carried out a difficult overnight operation in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district. The child, identified as Gurkaran Singh, also known as Vansh, had fallen into an uncovered borewell near his home in Chak Samana village on the Hoshiarpur–Dasuya road on Friday evening.

According to local residents, the incident took place around 4 pm when the child was playing near the agricultural site and accidentally slipped into the narrow pit, believed to be nearly 25 feet deep. Panic spread quickly in the village as family members and neighbours gathered at the scene while authorities were informed immediately.
Rescue Teams Launch Emergency Operation
Officials from the National Disaster Response Force, district administration, Punjab Police and State Disaster Response Force reached the location soon after the alert was received. Rescue workers first lowered a camera and oxygen supply pipe into the borewell to track the child’s condition and keep him supplied with air throughout the operation.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said the child’s movement could initially be seen through the camera feed, helping teams determine his exact position. Based on the assessment, rescuers began digging a parallel pit beside the borewell to create a safer access route.
The operation continued for several hours under challenging conditions. Authorities stated that workers had to proceed carefully to avoid loose soil collapsing into the narrow space. Sand repeatedly caved in during the digging process, at times obstructing camera visibility and slowing down the rescue work.
Mother Asked to Speak to Child
During the tense operation, officials requested the child’s mother to speak to him from the site in an effort to keep him calm. Rescue personnel believed familiar voices could help the boy remain responsive while teams continued their work underground.
Villagers remained gathered near the rescue site throughout the night, anxiously waiting for updates. Medical staff and emergency teams were also stationed nearby to provide immediate treatment once the child was brought out safely.
Child Shifted to Hospital After Rescue
After nearly nine hours of continuous effort, rescuers successfully reached the child and pulled him out at around 12.40 am. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical examination and treatment.
As the rescue operation concluded successfully, emotional scenes unfolded at the site. Family members and villagers thanked NDRF personnel and other officials involved in the mission. Several residents embraced rescue workers in appreciation of their efforts during the high-pressure operation.
Officials Praise Coordinated Efforts
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain said more than 40 NDRF personnel participated in the mission alongside police officials, local administration staff, medical teams and volunteers. She praised the coordination between different agencies and acknowledged the support provided by local residents during the emergency response.
Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik described the rescue as a challenging operation that required patience and teamwork. He said every department worked together continuously to ensure the child could be brought out safely.
Punjab Jails Minister Ravjot Singh stated that emergency medical teams had remained fully prepared throughout the operation so that the child could receive immediate care once rescued. Hoshiarpur Member of Parliament Raj Kumar Chabbewal also called the mission highly sensitive and appreciated the commitment shown by rescue agencies and officials on the ground.
The incident has once again raised concerns about unattended and uncovered borewells in rural areas, with residents urging authorities to ensure stricter safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
