FuelCrisis – NDMC Introduces Remote Work Plan to Reduce Fuel Usage
FuelCrisis – The New Delhi Municipal Council has introduced a temporary work-from-home arrangement for selected employees following concerns over fuel availability linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The decision comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged citizens and institutions to adopt precautionary measures similar to those used during the Covid-19 period, including online classes and flexible work systems.

NDMC Announces Immediate Remote Working Arrangement
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) on Wednesday issued an official order allowing a section of its workforce to operate remotely with immediate effect. The civic body said the move is intended to reduce fuel consumption while ensuring administrative operations continue smoothly through digital platforms.
NDMC Vice-Chairperson Kuljeet Singh Chahal stated that the decision was taken in response to the emerging fuel-related concerns caused by geopolitical tensions in West Asia. According to the council, the work-from-home mechanism is expected to ease daily commuting pressure and support efficient governance using online communication systems.
Eligible Employees to Work in Rotation
Under the newly announced system, up to 33 percent of employees belonging to Group ‘B’ and Group ‘C’ categories in selected departments will be allowed to work remotely. Officials clarified that the arrangement will depend on operational requirements and departmental priorities.
Department heads have been instructed to prepare rotational attendance schedules to ensure that public services and essential administrative responsibilities continue without interruption. The council emphasized that maintaining citizen services remains a top priority during the implementation of the new policy.
Preference for Employees Travelling Long Distances
The council further explained that priority for remote work approval would be given to staff members who travel from distant areas and rely on private vehicles for commuting. The administration believes this approach could significantly reduce fuel consumption and lower traffic pressure in the capital.
Officials noted that employees working from home would still be required to remain connected through official communication channels during office hours. They may also be called to attend office physically whenever necessary for urgent meetings or administrative work.
Government Encouraging Digital Alternatives
The development follows recent remarks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who advised the public and institutions to adopt practical measures similar to those followed during the Covid-19 pandemic. These suggestions included online classes for schoolchildren, increased use of digital communication, and remote work wherever feasible.
Authorities believe such steps could help manage fuel demand more effectively if supply-related challenges continue due to the international situation in West Asia. Several government departments and public institutions are now reviewing contingency plans to minimize unnecessary travel and maintain uninterrupted services through technology-based systems.
Focus on Continuity of Public Services
NDMC officials stressed that the remote working arrangement is not expected to impact essential civic operations. The council said all departments have been directed to maintain coordination and ensure that citizens continue receiving municipal services without delays.
The administration also highlighted that digital work systems developed during the pandemic period have strengthened the council’s ability to operate efficiently even when employees are working remotely. Officials added that the current arrangement may be adjusted further depending on future developments related to the fuel situation.
