Monsoon – Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rainfall Across Western Districts
Monsoon – A developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger widespread rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu in the coming days, with weather authorities warning of isolated heavy showers in a few western and hill districts until May 19.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said the weather disturbance, currently active over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, has created favourable atmospheric conditions for sustained rain activity across the state. Areas along the Western Ghats, coastal belts and delta districts are likely to witness increased rainfall during this period.
Monsoon Conditions Begin to Strengthen
Meteorologists have also pointed to early signs of the southwest monsoon gradually advancing towards parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 16. This development is being viewed as an indication of the approaching monsoon season over southern India.
According to officials, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected at isolated places across Tamil Nadu over the next several days. The rain activity is likely to remain uneven, with some districts receiving more intense showers due to local weather conditions.
Western and Hill Districts on Alert
The western districts and hilly regions are expected to receive the highest rainfall because of moisture-laden winds connected to the low-pressure circulation. Authorities have issued heavy rain alerts for several sensitive regions.
The Nilgiris district has been placed under a heavy rainfall warning for May 14, May 15 and May 17. In Coimbatore district, particularly in the ghat areas, intense rainfall is expected on May 15. Theni district is also likely to experience heavy showers on May 16.
Weather officials have urged residents living in vulnerable hill regions to remain alert, especially in locations that are prone to water accumulation, minor landslides and slippery road conditions during periods of continuous rainfall.
Delta Regions Expected to Receive Rain Relief
Several delta districts are also likely to experience moderate rainfall along with thunderstorm activity. The change in weather is expected to provide relief from the hot and humid conditions that have affected many parts of the state in recent weeks.
Local administrations are closely monitoring the weather situation, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas where sudden rainfall could disrupt normal movement and daily activities.
Temperatures Drop Across the State
The rainfall activity has already influenced temperatures in many regions of Tamil Nadu. During the last 24 hours, maximum temperatures reportedly dropped by around two to three degrees Celsius in a few isolated places.
Residents in several cities and towns experienced comparatively cooler conditions after weeks of above-normal summer heat. The dip in daytime temperatures has brought temporary comfort, although humidity levels remain high in many coastal areas.
Chennai Likely to Witness Cloudy Conditions
In Chennai, the weather department has predicted partly cloudy skies over the next two days, with chances of light rainfall in some areas of the city. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain around 35 to 36 degrees Celsius.
Despite the expected rain, humidity is likely to stay elevated, leading to warm and sticky conditions during parts of the day. Officials have advised people to stay updated with local weather bulletins as conditions may change depending on the movement of the low-pressure system.
