WeatherUpdate – Delhi Braces for Thunderstorms as Temperatures Set to Rise

WeatherUpdate – Residents across the national capital are expected to witness changing weather conditions this week as thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are likely to affect several parts of the city before temperatures climb steadily over the coming days.

Delhi thunderstorm temperature rise

The Regional Weather Forecast Centre in Delhi has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph during Wednesday night. Officials said daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius, offering only brief relief before hotter conditions return later this week.

Temperature Rise Expected Over Coming Days

According to the India Meteorological Department’s latest weather bulletin released on Tuesday evening, Delhi is likely to experience a gradual increase in daytime temperatures over the next seven days. Meteorologists estimate that maximum temperatures may rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius during this period, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable for the next few days.

Weather experts noted that although isolated rainfall activity may continue temporarily, the overall trend indicates a return to dry and warmer conditions across Delhi and nearby regions.

Safdarjung Records Near-Normal Day Temperature

On Tuesday, Safdarjung, which serves as Delhi’s primary weather observation station, recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. This was marginally below the seasonal average by 0.5 degrees. The minimum temperature settled at 27.6 degrees Celsius, which was recorded slightly above normal levels.

Humidity levels fluctuated between 39 percent and 68 percent through the day, creating humid conditions in several parts of the city. Easterly winds blowing at around 15 kmph were also observed during the afternoon and evening hours.

Weather Conditions Across Delhi-NCR

Different areas within the Delhi-NCR region reported varying temperature readings. Mayur Vihar recorded one of the lower daytime temperatures at 35.2 degrees Celsius, while Safdarjung remained among the hottest locations at 39 degrees Celsius.

Night temperatures also showed variation across the region. Palam registered a minimum temperature of 25.5 degrees Celsius, while Noida reported warmer night conditions with temperatures touching 29 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists stated that these differences are mainly due to local weather patterns, cloud movement, and wind direction influencing individual pockets of the NCR region.

Thunderstorms and Light Rain Likely

For Wednesday, the weather department has forecast partly cloudy skies along with chances of light rainfall in isolated areas. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds are also expected during parts of the day, especially during the forenoon and nighttime hours.

Officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, particularly while travelling or engaging in outdoor work. Sudden strong winds may affect visibility and traffic movement in some areas.

The minimum temperature on Wednesday is expected to remain between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures are likely to stay within the 37 to 39 degrees Celsius range.

Clearer Skies Expected After May 14

From May 14 onward, weather conditions are expected to improve gradually with clearer skies forecast across Delhi. The IMD indicated that dry weather is likely to dominate between May 15 and May 18.

As cloud cover reduces, temperatures are projected to rise sharply. By May 17 and 18, maximum temperatures may touch between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius. Minimum temperatures are also expected to increase slightly, remaining between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius during this period.

Western Disturbance May Influence Northwest India

The IMD further stated that a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to impact Northwest India starting May 15. At present, three upper air cyclonic circulations remain active over North Pakistan, West Rajasthan, and north-central Uttar Pradesh.

These systems are influencing weather activity across northern parts of the country and may continue to affect wind patterns, cloud formation, and isolated rainfall over the next few days.
