ConflictUpdates – Russia Renews Drone Assaults After Ukraine Truce Ends

ConflictUpdates – Russia launched fresh attacks on Ukraine shortly after a temporary three-day ceasefire came to an end on Tuesday, with Ukrainian officials reporting drone strikes over Kyiv and casualties in the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region.

Russia renews drone attacks after truce

According to Ukrainian authorities, air raid sirens were activated in the capital after reports of unmanned aerial vehicles entering Kyiv’s airspace. Residents were urged to remain inside shelters while air defence systems responded to the threat. The renewed assault marked the first major alert in the city since the ceasefire began last week.

Drone Activity Reported Over Kyiv

Tymur Tkachenko, who heads Kyiv’s military administration, said enemy drones were detected above the capital during the early hours following the expiration of the truce. Officials warned citizens to stay alert until emergency warnings were officially lifted.

Regional authorities also confirmed that Ukraine’s air defence systems were operating around the city to intercept incoming aerial threats. While no immediate large-scale destruction was reported in Kyiv, the attacks signaled a rapid return to hostilities after the brief pause in fighting.

Casualties Reported in Dnipropetrovsk Region

In eastern Ukraine, officials said Russian strikes caused civilian casualties in the Dnipropetrovsk region. A man was killed in the Synelnykove district, while a woman suffered injuries during the attack.

Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the regional military administration, stated that at least three additional people were wounded in separate strikes elsewhere in the region. Emergency teams were deployed to affected areas as local authorities assessed damage caused by the bombardment.

The latest attacks underscored the continuing instability in eastern Ukraine, where frontline areas have remained vulnerable despite repeated diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing violence.

Russia Claims Interception of Ukrainian Drones

On the Russian side, the defence ministry announced that its air defence forces had intercepted and destroyed 27 Ukrainian drones overnight. The unmanned aircraft were reportedly shot down over the Belgorod, Voronezh, and Rostov regions between midnight and early morning Moscow time.

Russian officials described the drones as fixed-wing aircraft and said military systems had successfully prevented further damage. No casualties or major destruction were immediately disclosed by Russian authorities.

The exchange of drone attacks highlighted the fragile nature of the ceasefire, which both countries accused each other of violating even before it officially ended.

Trump’s Ceasefire Appeal Fails to Hold

The temporary truce had been announced by US President Donald Trump on Friday, ahead of Russia’s World War II victory commemorations. Trump expressed hope that the pause in fighting could become a first step toward ending the war that has continued since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

However, reports of ongoing attacks and civilian casualties emerged during the ceasefire period, with both Moscow and Kyiv blaming one another for breaches of the agreement.

Despite diplomatic pressure from international leaders, no lasting breakthrough has yet been achieved in negotiations intended to end the conflict.

Zelensky Says Frontline Fighting Never Stopped

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that combat operations continued throughout the supposed ceasefire period. In his nightly address, he said Ukrainian forces documented active fighting along the front lines even during the truce.

Zelensky also suggested that global attention, particularly from the United States, had increasingly shifted toward tensions involving Iran, potentially reducing international focus on the war in Ukraine.

Peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have so far failed to produce concrete results. While Trump’s ceasefire proposal briefly raised hopes for renewed diplomacy, the latest wave of attacks indicates that prospects for a sustained agreement remain uncertain.
