Livelihoods – Delhi Shopkeepers Brace for Sealing Drive Near Metro Corridor

Livelihoods –   Shopkeepers and small vendors near New Ashok Nagar Metro Station in East Delhi are facing uncertainty ahead of a sealing drive scheduled by civic authorities on Tuesday. The action, planned jointly by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), targets commercial establishments allegedly operating in residential areas without the required permissions.

Authorities Seek Police Support for Operation

According to an official communication issued by the DDA on May 6, the agency requested police deployment from the East Delhi district administration to ensure law and order during the operation. The drive is expected to take place along the road near New Ashok Nagar Metro Station and in the nearby Chilla Saroda Bangar locality.

The document stated that the sealing process has been initiated under the directions of a monitoring committee. While the DDA identified the properties involved, the implementation will be carried out by the MCD under the supervision of officials from both agencies.

Traders Say No Formal Notice Was Issued

Many local business owners claim they were not informed officially about the proposed action. Traders said news of the drive spread informally through conversations among residents and market associations, leaving many unprepared.

Several shopkeepers began shutting their storefronts over the weekend by placing bricks and temporary barriers at entrances in an attempt to avoid immediate sealing. Residents described the market area as unusually tense over the past two days.

Normally crowded lanes filled with grocery outlets, vegetable sellers, meat shops, and daily-use stores appeared partially deserted, with goods shifted onto pavements and shopfronts blocked off. Local residents searching for routine household supplies were seen moving between closed establishments.

Business Owners Fear Financial Hardship

Sandeep, who operates a grocery store in the locality, said hundreds of families depend directly on these businesses. He estimated that around 1,500 to 1,800 shops function in the affected stretch.

He said the sudden nature of the proposed action has created confusion among traders who are unsure about the next course of action. Another shop owner, Vijender, said such enforcement measures could severely affect the income of people who rely entirely on small businesses for survival.

Street vendors are also concerned about the consequences of the operation. Babita, who runs a food stall nearby, said she has decided not to open her stall on the day of the drive due to fear of eviction or penalties.

She questioned how small vendors would be allowed to continue operations if permanent shops themselves were facing sealing measures.

Residents Seek Relief From Authorities

The local Residents Welfare Association and property owners have appealed to authorities to halt the drive temporarily. In representations submitted to officials and East Delhi MP Harsh Malhotra, they argued that no prior notices had been served to many affected parties.

The representation also mentioned that land-use change procedures for the area are reportedly under consideration. According to the letter, mapping work linked to possible denotification has already been completed and property owners are willing to pay applicable conversion or convenience charges if regularisation is permitted.

Long-Running Commercial Activity Under Scrutiny

Residents familiar with the area said many establishments have been functioning for years despite lacking formal commercial land-use approvals or required trade licences. Some traders now fear substantial fines or permanent closure if their businesses are found operational during inspections.

Ali Hassan, who runs a scrap-related business in the locality, said the uncertainty has placed enormous stress on families dependent on small enterprises. He said his earnings support a household with five children and any disruption would directly impact their daily needs.

Local BJP leader Vishal Kumar acknowledged that while authorities may be acting within legal guidelines, the move could significantly affect the livelihoods of many residents. He added that communications have already been sent to the DDA requesting reconsideration or relief for affected traders.

Impact Extends Beyond Market Area

The proposed sealing drive has also raised broader concerns about the dependence of densely populated East Delhi neighbourhoods on informal commercial networks. Many residential colonies in the region rely heavily on nearby local markets for affordable goods, services, and employment opportunities.

Residents fear that large-scale closure of businesses could disrupt both economic activity and access to essential daily supplies in the area.
