Municipality Scam – ED Arrests Former Bengal Minister Over Recruitment Case
Municipality Scam – Former West Bengal minister Sujit Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Monday in connection with the alleged municipality recruitment scam involving irregular appointments in the South Dum Dum Municipality. The arrest marks another significant development in the ongoing investigation into suspected corruption linked to public sector recruitment in the state.

BJP MLA Reacts Strongly to Arrest
Reacting to the development, BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh said the former minister had been given several chances during the investigation and claimed that the arrest had come much later than expected. Speaking to reporters, Ghosh argued that the central agency had allowed enough time for cooperation before taking action.
He further stated that the arrest should not be viewed through the lens of upcoming elections and maintained that the legal process had been progressing for a long time. According to him, the Enforcement Directorate had already extended sufficient opportunity to Bose during the probe.
Details of the Enforcement Directorate Investigation
The Enforcement Directorate alleged that Sujit Bose played a role in recommending around 150 candidates for municipal positions in exchange for financial gains. Investigators suspect that the appointments were influenced through unofficial channels instead of following standard recruitment procedures.
Officials associated with the investigation believe that several appointments within the municipality were made without maintaining transparency or merit-based selection norms. The agency has been examining documents, financial records, and recruitment-related data as part of the wider inquiry.
The case is being investigated under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. During the course of the probe, the ED reportedly identified what it described as proceeds of crime connected to the alleged recruitment irregularities.
Focus on South Dum Dum Municipality
The investigation is centered around recruitment activities linked to the South Dum Dum Municipality, where authorities suspect large-scale irregularities in appointments. According to officials, the alleged scam involved manipulation in hiring processes for various municipal posts.
Investigators are trying to determine whether recruitment rules were deliberately bypassed and whether financial transactions influenced candidate selection. The agency is also examining the possible involvement of other individuals connected to the recruitment process.
Wider Crackdown on Recruitment Irregularities
The arrest comes at a time when central agencies are continuing investigations into multiple recruitment-related cases across West Bengal. Over the past few years, several allegations concerning irregular public appointments have surfaced in the state, leading to inquiries by different investigative agencies.
These investigations have focused on suspected corruption in government-linked recruitment systems, including allegations of favoritism, illegal monetary exchanges, and procedural violations. Officials say the latest arrest is part of a broader effort to examine whether recruitment processes in public institutions were manipulated for personal benefit.
Political reactions to such cases have remained intense, with opposition leaders repeatedly accusing the state government of failing to ensure transparency in public hiring. Meanwhile, leaders from the ruling side have often alleged political motives behind central agency actions.
Court Appearance Scheduled
Officials confirmed that Bose is expected to be produced before a special PMLA court on Tuesday. The Enforcement Directorate is likely to seek custodial remand to continue questioning him regarding the alleged recruitment scam and related financial transactions.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further questioning and document analysis could reveal additional details in the case. No official statement has yet been issued by Bose regarding the allegations following his arrest.
