IPL2026 – Abhishek Sharma Emerges as Strong Orange Cap Contender

IPL2026 –  Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith believes Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Abhishek Sharma could eventually overtake teammate Heinrich Klaasen in the race for the Orange Cap during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 season.

Klaasen currently leads the tournament’s batting charts with 494 runs at an impressive average of 54.88. Sharma, however, remains close behind with 475 runs while maintaining a healthy strike rate and consistency at the top of the order. Smith feels the advantage of opening the innings may ultimately work in Sharma’s favour as the tournament heads into its decisive phase.

Smith Highlights Advantage of Opening Role

Speaking in his SA20 column, Smith explained that batters opening the innings naturally get more time at the crease, giving them greater opportunities to build big scores. According to him, modern IPL pitches have heavily favoured aggressive batting, which increases the chances for top-order players to dominate.

Smith pointed out that Sharma’s fearless approach has stood out throughout the competition. He noted that the left-hander often targets square regions on the off side and plays with a level of freedom commonly seen among younger cricketers in recent years.

The former Proteas captain also mentioned that Sharma’s ability to recover quickly after a poor outing makes him a strong candidate to finish the season as the tournament’s leading run-scorer. He added that flat batting surfaces across venues continue to support attacking players at the top of the order.

Klaasen Returns to Best Form in IPL

While backing Sharma in the Orange Cap battle, Smith also praised Heinrich Klaasen for rediscovering his rhythm after a disappointing SA20 campaign earlier this year. Klaasen had struggled during the latest SA20 season for Durban’s Super Giants, managing only 138 runs.

However, the South African wicketkeeper-batter has looked far more confident in the IPL. Klaasen has become one of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s most dependable middle-order performers, combining power-hitting with improved shot selection under pressure situations.

So far this season, Klaasen has smashed 36 boundaries and 23 sixes, playing several important innings for Hyderabad. Smith acknowledged that some of Klaasen’s early knocks in the competition helped stabilize the team during difficult moments.

He also observed that Klaasen showed maturity in pacing his innings rather than relying only on aggressive strokeplay. According to Smith, balancing caution with attacking cricket is often more challenging for middle-order batters in high-pressure T20 matches.

Donovan Ferreira Impresses With Finishing Ability

Smith also reserved praise for Rajasthan Royals batter Donovan Ferreira, who has made a major impact despite limited opportunities in previous IPL seasons. Ferreira has emerged as one of the most dangerous finishers in the tournament, especially during the final overs of innings.

The South African power-hitter currently shares the lead for most sixes scored between overs 16 and 20 alongside Tim David. Klaasen follows closely behind in that category, highlighting the influence of South African batters in the competition this season.

Ferreira produced crucial unbeaten innings against Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, helping Rajasthan Royals close out tense matches. One of his standout performances came against Delhi, where he hammered an unbeaten 47 from only 14 deliveries at a remarkable strike rate above 330.

That innings included six towering sixes and demonstrated Ferreira’s ability to change the momentum of a match within a few overs. Smith said it was encouraging to see Ferreira stepping up during a critical stage of the tournament.

Battle Intensifies Ahead of Playoff Race

With the IPL 2026 season entering its final stretch, the competition for playoff positions and individual honours continues to intensify. Players like Sharma, Klaasen and Ferreira have played important roles for their franchises and are expected to remain key figures in the closing weeks of the tournament.

Smith believes teams aiming for a top-four finish will depend heavily on experienced match-winners maintaining consistency under pressure. As the Orange Cap race tightens, every innings could prove decisive in determining the season’s leading run-scorer
