RemoteWork – IT Employees Body Urges Wider Adoption of Work From Home
RemoteWork – The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has appealed to the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment to encourage work-from-home arrangements across the IT and IT-enabled services sectors. The request comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to reduce unnecessary travel and focus on fuel conservation measures amid growing concerns over energy use and urban congestion.
Industry Body Seeks Government Advisory
In a letter sent to Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, the employees’ association said the technology industry had already proven during the COVID-19 period that remote working systems could operate effectively without affecting productivity or client delivery. According to the organisation, many companies successfully maintained operations for global customers while employees worked from their homes for extended periods.
NITES stated that the IT and ITeS sectors are among the most digitally connected industries in the country, making them suitable for large-scale remote operations wherever feasible. The association argued that daily travel by lakhs of professionals places avoidable pressure on transportation systems and contributes to excessive fuel consumption.
Concerns Over Urban Travel and Fuel Usage
The organisation highlighted that workers in major metropolitan cities often spend several hours commuting each day despite the availability of digital tools that allow seamless communication and project management from remote locations. It said reducing office travel could help lower traffic congestion and lessen the burden on public transport and city infrastructure.
NITES also pointed out that work-from-home policies should not be viewed only as a matter of employee convenience or corporate flexibility. Instead, the body described remote working as a practical step that supports national efforts toward fuel conservation and environmental sustainability.
The association added that encouraging remote work where operationally possible could lead to long-term benefits for employees, businesses and urban administration alike. Reduced commuting, it noted, would also help decrease carbon emissions generated by daily traffic movement in large cities.
Remote Operations Proven During Pandemic Years
Referring to the pandemic years, NITES said software development teams, customer support divisions and multinational technology companies continued to function efficiently while operating remotely. It maintained that several firms managed client servicing, technical support and project execution without major disruption during that period.
The employees’ body believes this experience demonstrated that a hybrid or fully remote structure can remain viable for many roles within the technology industry. It also noted that digital infrastructure and collaboration platforms have significantly improved over recent years, making remote coordination easier than before.
Appeal Framed as National Cooperation
The letter, signed by NITES president Harpreet Singh Saluja, clarified that the request should not be seen as opposition to employers or existing workplace policies. Instead, the organisation described its proposal as an effort toward collective national responsibility in line with the Prime Minister’s broader message on reducing avoidable fuel consumption.
According to the association, a government advisory encouraging work-from-home practices could help companies voluntarily adopt policies suited to their operational requirements while also contributing to national resource conservation goals.
The development has once again brought attention to the debate around workplace flexibility in India’s technology sector, especially as many companies continue balancing hybrid work arrangements with increasing office attendance expectations.
