Union Home Minister Amit Shah has remained closely involved in the post-election process, reflecting the importance the BJP leadership places on Bengal’s political future.
For several weeks during the election campaign, Shah maintained an unusually active presence in West Bengal, directly supervising campaign activities and coordinating with party leaders. Political observers view this approach as a clear indication of the BJP’s determination to strengthen its position in a state that has long remained politically challenging for the party.
Shah Likely to Oversee Key Legislative Meeting
Party leaders have indicated that Shah is expected to serve as the central observer during the BJP legislature party meeting scheduled for May 8 in Kolkata. His involvement in the process is considered significant because he rarely takes on such responsibilities personally in state-level leadership selections.
According to senior BJP figures, Shah’s continued presence is intended to ensure unity within the organisation while preventing internal disagreements during the final leadership announcement. The move is also being interpreted as a response to earlier criticism from Mamata Banerjee, who had questioned his extensive role in Bengal politics during the election campaign.
Suvendu Adhikari Emerges as Leading Contender
Among the names being discussed, Suvendu Adhikari is widely seen as the strongest candidate for the chief minister’s position. BJP insiders believe his organisational experience, electoral influence, and political visibility have strengthened his prospects ahead of the crucial legislative meeting.
Several party representatives noted that the BJP leadership is expected to prioritise administrative capability and long-term political planning rather than caste considerations while selecting the state’s next leader. Party strategists are also reportedly evaluating how the decision could influence the BJP’s preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
A senior BJP functionary said the leadership decision would likely reflect a combination of political management skills, governance experience, and the party’s broader expansion strategy in eastern India. According to internal discussions, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya may formally propose the final name during the legislature party gathering.
Bengal’s Political Landscape Shapes BJP Calculations
West Bengal’s political environment has historically revolved around ideological and class-oriented politics rather than caste-based mobilisation. This tradition, shaped largely during the decades-long Left Front rule, continues to influence electoral strategies across political parties in the state.
Political analysts believe this background could work in favour of Adhikari, whose leadership profile aligns with the BJP’s efforts to build a wider social and political coalition in Bengal. However, party insiders also acknowledge that the final decision will rest entirely with the central leadership.
At the same time, discussions are continuing over possible representation for tribal and other communities in important government positions. Sources within the BJP said the party is carefully considering the strong electoral support it received in the Junglemahal region, where tribal voters played a major role in the BJP’s performance across several Assembly constituencies.
Internal Factions Continue Behind-the-Scenes Discussions
Apart from Adhikari, other names continue to surface during internal consultations. Supporters of senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh are also said to be actively engaged in discussions over the party’s future leadership structure in the state.
Party insiders believe Shah’s direct supervision of the process is aimed at ensuring a smooth transition and minimising any possibility of internal resistance after the final announcement. Senior BJP leaders suggested that his role as observer carries both political and organisational significance beyond the formal selection process.
The upcoming legislature party meeting is therefore expected to be closely watched, not only for the leadership announcement itself but also for what it signals about the BJP’s long-term ambitions in West Bengal politics.
