Infrastructure Safety – A tragic incident in Delhi’s Mukundpur locality has led to disciplinary action against a junior engineer after a two-year-old girl lost her life by falling into an uncovered drain. The Delhi government announced the engineer’s dismissal following directions issued by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
Child Went Missing While Playing Outside Home
The victim, identified as two-year-old Asvi Kesari, had reportedly stepped outside her residence to play during the late morning hours. According to local residents, the child suddenly disappeared, prompting her family and neighbours to begin an urgent search across the area.
As concern grew over her whereabouts, residents suspected she may have slipped into an open drain situated along Mukundpur Ram Janaki Path in Ishu Vihar. The drain had allegedly been left uncovered following recent desilting work carried out in the locality.
Child Found Inside Uncovered Drain
After several hours of searching, the girl was eventually located trapped inside thick sludge within the drain. Officials said the drain measured nearly three feet in width and around four feet deep. Residents immediately pulled the child out and rushed her to a nearby government hospital.
Doctors later declared her dead on arrival. The incident sparked anger among local residents and family members, who accused civic authorities of serious negligence in failing to secure the hazardous site after maintenance work.
Family Devastated by the Loss
Neighbours described the family as deeply shattered by the tragedy. Asvi was the only child of her parents. Her father operates a small grocery shop in the area, while her mother manages the household.
Residents in the neighbourhood said concerns about uncovered drains had been raised earlier as such locations pose significant danger, especially during the monsoon season and in densely populated residential areas.
Chief Minister Orders Immediate Action
Reacting strongly to the incident, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed grief over the child’s death and termed the incident deeply disturbing. In a statement shared on social media platform X, she conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and said the negligence involved in leaving the drain open was unacceptable.
Following her instructions, the irrigation and flood control department removed the contractual junior engineer from service with immediate effect. Officials confirmed that disciplinary measures were initiated after preliminary findings pointed towards administrative negligence.
Government Orders Safety Review Across Departments
The Chief Minister also directed all concerned departments to conduct inspections of open drains and other dangerous public sites falling under their jurisdictions. Authorities have been instructed to identify locations that could threaten public safety and take corrective measures without delay.
The Delhi government warned that officials responsible for lapses in safety standards would face strict accountability in future incidents. The administration emphasised that protecting citizens, particularly children, remains a top priority and that negligence affecting public safety would not be tolerated.
Growing Focus on Civic Infrastructure Safety
The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding civic infrastructure maintenance in several parts of Delhi, where uncovered drains and poorly secured construction sites continue to pose risks to residents. Urban safety experts have repeatedly stressed the need for stricter monitoring, timely repairs, and proper barricading during maintenance operations.
Local residents in Mukundpur have now demanded permanent safety measures and regular inspections to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
