Politics – Congress Backs Vijay’s TVK for New Power-Sharing Government in Tamil Nadu
Politics – The political landscape in Tamil Nadu witnessed a major development on Tuesday after the Congress decided to join hands with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in an effort to establish a new secular administration in the state. The move comes immediately after the fall of the DMK-led coalition, marking the first major crack within the alliance that had governed the state.

Congress Moves Quickly After Alliance Setback
The Congress leadership acted swiftly following recent political changes in Tamil Nadu. The party, which secured five seats in the newly elected Assembly, held an emergency meeting late Tuesday night to discuss TVK’s proposal for support in forming the next government.
According to party sources, the Tamil Nadu Congress Political Affairs Committee met virtually at around 10.30 pm. The meeting was chaired by AICC state in-charge Girish Chodankar and conducted through Zoom due to the urgency of the situation.
After discussions, the committee unanimously approved a resolution supporting Vijay’s party. The decision effectively clears the path for a power-sharing arrangement between Congress and TVK.
Central Leadership Gives State Unit Freedom to Decide
The late-night announcement followed consultations between senior Congress leaders at the national level. The party’s top leadership reportedly chose to leave the final decision to the Tamil Nadu unit after reviewing the political circumstances in the state.
A high-level discussion was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, party general secretary K C Venugopal, and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar. During the meeting, the leadership considered Vijay’s request for political backing and reviewed the possible implications of supporting TVK.
Rather than issuing direct instructions, the central leadership allowed the state leadership to take the final call based on local political realities and alliance considerations.
Vijay’s TVK Gains Political Momentum
The support from Congress is being viewed as a significant boost for Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which has been attempting to strengthen its political position in Tamil Nadu. The actor-turned-politician has recently increased his political activities and outreach across the state, attracting attention from both voters and established parties.
Political observers believe the Congress decision may reshape alliance equations in Tamil Nadu, especially after the collapse of the previous ruling coalition. The development also signals the possibility of new regional political alignments ahead of future electoral contests.
While detailed discussions regarding cabinet positions or the exact structure of the proposed government have not yet been publicly disclosed, sources suggest that talks between both sides are expected to continue in the coming days.
DMK Alliance Faces Major Political Challenge
The Congress decision is being seen as an important setback for the DMK-led front, which recently lost power. The exit of Congress from the alliance structure could influence political calculations in the Assembly and alter the balance among opposition and regional parties.
The evolving situation has already triggered intense political discussions across Tamil Nadu, with several parties closely monitoring the formation of the proposed government. Analysts say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the Congress-TVK understanding can translate into a stable administration.
Neither TVK nor Congress leaders have yet announced a formal timeline for government formation, but the unanimous support resolution indicates that negotiations have moved into an advanced stage.
