Narcotics Crackdown –  The Himachal Pradesh Police has stepped up its campaign against illegal drug networks by taking strict preventive action against repeat offenders linked to narcotics smuggling across the state.

The intensified operation is part of the state government’s ongoing Anti-Chitta Jan Andolan, a large-scale initiative aimed at reducing the spread of heroin and other banned substances among the youth. According to officials, the police have started using provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act, 1988 to detain habitual traffickers involved in organised drug activities.

Preventive Detention Orders Executed Across Multiple Districts

Police authorities confirmed that 15 preventive detention orders were successfully carried out in different districts of Himachal Pradesh after months of intelligence gathering and surveillance operations. Investigators reportedly examined criminal records, trafficking patterns, and the wider networks connected to drug syndicates before initiating the action.

Among the districts, Sirmaur and Kullu recorded the highest number of detentions with four cases each. Kangra and Bilaspur witnessed two detentions each, while one detention was carried out in Dehra, Solan, and Mandi police districts respectively.

Officials stated that the detained individuals were repeatedly involved in the illegal narcotics trade and were considered a serious threat to public safety and social stability.

Focus on Organised Drug Networks

Senior police officers said the latest action reflects a more targeted strategy aimed at dismantling organised trafficking operations functioning both within Himachal Pradesh and in surrounding regions. Authorities believe preventive detention can disrupt the activities of key traffickers who continue illegal operations despite facing repeated criminal cases under the NDPS Act.

The police headquarters noted that investigations relied heavily on technical surveillance, field intelligence, and tracking of both supply and distribution channels associated with drug syndicates. The objective, according to officials, is to weaken the structure of organised networks rather than limiting action to individual arrests.

DGP Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy

Director General of Police Ashok Tewari reiterated the department’s commitment to eliminating narcotics-related crime from the state. He said law enforcement agencies are pursuing intelligence-driven operations and are prepared to use strong legal measures against habitual offenders.

The DGP stated that traffickers involved in the drug trade continue to endanger the future of young people and that preventive detention has become an important tool in controlling such activities. He also emphasised that enforcement agencies are continuously monitoring suspected networks and identifying individuals linked to illegal trafficking.

According to the police leadership, Himachal Pradesh has adopted a strict zero-tolerance policy against drug peddlers, organised syndicates, and repeat offenders operating in the narcotics business.

Public Participation Encouraged in Anti-Drug Campaign

Police officials have also appealed to residents, educational institutions, parents, and youth groups to actively support anti-drug efforts by sharing credible information with authorities. Citizens have been encouraged to use emergency services such as Dial 112 or local police communication channels to report suspicious activities related to narcotics.

Authorities assured that all information provided by the public would remain confidential. Officials believe community participation will play a major role in strengthening the wider Anti-Chitta Jan Andolan campaign launched by the state government.

Government Continues Statewide Anti-Drug Measures

The Himachal Pradesh government has repeatedly stressed the importance of a collective social response in tackling the growing challenge of narcotics abuse and trafficking. Officials said preventive detention and other legal provisions would continue to be used wherever necessary against repeat offenders involved in organised drug crime.

Police authorities added that coordinated enforcement, inter-agency cooperation, and public awareness campaigns remain central to the state’s long-term strategy for creating a safer and drug-free Himachal Pradesh.
