Infrastructure – Cabinet Approves Major Railway Expansion Across Six States

Infrastructure –  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval of three large-scale railway expansion projects aimed at strengthening transportation networks across several regions of the country. The newly cleared projects are expected to improve passenger movement, boost freight operations, and support economic activity in multiple states.

Prime Minister Modi described the railway initiatives as an important step toward improving national infrastructure and encouraging long-term economic growth. In a message shared on social media platform X, he said the projects would help improve connectivity and make travel to important tourist destinations easier for people across the country.

Railway Projects to Cover 19 Districts

The projects received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister. According to official details, the Ministry of Railways will undertake three multi-tracking projects with an estimated investment of around Rs 23,437 crore.

The approved works include the Nagda-Mathura third and fourth railway lines, the Guntakal-Wadi third and fourth lines, and the Burhwal-Sitapur third and fourth lines. These projects will pass through districts located in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

Focus on Better Connectivity and Freight Movement

Officials said the additional railway lines are expected to increase route capacity and reduce congestion on some of the country’s busy rail corridors. The move is also aimed at improving service reliability and operational performance for Indian Railways.

The government stated that the projects are aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated infrastructure planning and multi-modal connectivity. Authorities believe the improved rail network will allow smoother transportation of passengers, industrial goods, and essential commodities.

The expansion is expected to add nearly 901 kilometres to the Indian Railways network. It is also likely to strengthen transport links for more than 4,000 villages with a combined population estimated at around 83 lakh people.

Tourist Destinations Expected to Benefit

Several important religious and tourism centres are expected to receive better rail access once the projects are completed. These include Mahakaleshwar, Mathura, Vrindavan, Ranthambore National Park, Kuno National Park, Keoladeo National Park, and Naimisharanya.

Rail connectivity improvements are also expected to support travel to places such as Mantralayam and the Sri Nettikanti Anjaneya Swamy Vari Temple in Kasapuram. Officials believe easier transportation could encourage tourism activity and local economic development in these regions.

Economic and Environmental Impact Highlighted

The government noted that the proposed railway corridors are important for transporting commodities including coal, food grains, cement, petroleum products, fertilisers, containers, iron ore, and steel.

According to official estimates, the projects could support additional freight movement of nearly 60 million tonnes annually. Authorities also highlighted environmental benefits linked to rail transportation, calling it a more energy-efficient and eco-friendly mode compared to road transport.

The projects are expected to help reduce oil imports significantly while lowering carbon emissions. Government estimates suggest the reduction in emissions could be comparable to the environmental impact of planting nearly seven crore trees.
