FireIncident – Probe Intensifies After Deadly Blaze in Delhi Residential Block

FireIncident –  A day after a devastating fire swept through a residential building in Shahdara’s Vivek Vihar Extension, authorities have stepped up their investigation into the incident that claimed nine lives. On Monday, teams from the crime branch and forensic experts revisited the site to gather crucial evidence and better understand what triggered the tragedy.

Delhi fire probe intensifies

Investigation Focuses on Possible Cause of Fire

Officials involved in the probe said the exact cause of the blaze is still unclear. Early indications suggest a possible air conditioner malfunction, but investigators have not ruled out other factors. A senior police officer stated that multiple teams are working simultaneously to determine whether an AC compressor blast or another technical fault may have ignited the fire. Authorities are also considering the possibility of creating a three-dimensional map of the building to assist in reconstructing the sequence of events.

Forensic Teams Examine Building Structure

On Monday, forensic teams conducted a detailed inspection of the building, focusing particularly on the second floor and upper levels where the damage appeared severe. Investigators collected physical evidence and documented the internal layout of the structure to support the ongoing inquiry. A comprehensive map of the building has been prepared to aid technical analysis.

Further inspections are scheduled, with specialists from the fire department and the electricity department expected to assess the site. These teams will examine the electrical systems, including wiring quality and load capacity, to identify any faults that may have contributed to the incident.

Technical Angle: AC Units Under Scrutiny

Another official familiar with the investigation pointed out a potential technical risk linked to air conditioners installed near drainage areas. According to preliminary assessments, such placements significantly increase the likelihood of gas leakage. When refrigerant gas escapes, it may carry oil from the system, which can lead to overheating of the compressor. In extreme cases, this can result in an explosion. Investigators are closely examining whether such a scenario played a role in this incident.

Residents Raise Safety Concerns

Local residents, still shaken by the tragedy, have highlighted structural issues within the building that may have worsened the situation. Several people noted that iron grills installed at the rear of the property restricted escape routes, potentially trapping occupants during the fire. These concerns are now part of the broader safety review being conducted by authorities.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

The fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday, around 3:40 am, catching many residents off guard. Emergency responders managed to rescue 15 individuals from the building, while nine victims were found dead across different floors. Those injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where at least one person sustained burn injuries estimated at around 30 percent.

Rising Fire Incidents Raise Alarm

The incident comes amid a noticeable increase in fire-related emergencies across the city. Data from recent months shows a sharp rise in such cases. In April alone, authorities recorded 2,663 fire calls, a significant jump from 1,538 in March. Earlier in the year, the numbers were comparatively lower, with 1,396 calls in January and 1,096 in February.

Between January and April, the city reported a total of 6,693 fire-related incidents. Overall emergency calls during this period reached 12,008, with April accounting for a substantial share of 3,914 calls. Officials attribute this surge largely to rising temperatures and an increase in fires linked to dry waste and garbage.

Authorities Urge Caution and Compliance

In light of the growing number of fire incidents, authorities have urged residents and building owners to follow safety guidelines strictly. Regular maintenance of electrical systems, proper installation of appliances, and ensuring accessible emergency exits are being emphasised as critical measures to prevent similar tragedies.

As the investigation continues, officials hope that a clearer understanding of the cause will help strengthen safety protocols and reduce the risk of future incidents.
