Discussions between Iran and the United States have made little progress since a ceasefire came into effect on April 8. Despite the pause in active fighting, only one round of direct negotiations has taken place, leaving several critical issues unresolved. According to Iranian officials, differences in expectations and demands have contributed significantly to the lack of advancement.
Baqaei, in remarks broadcast on state television, indicated that Tehran believes Washington’s current stance is preventing meaningful progress. He suggested that a shift toward more moderate demands could help revive the dialogue and pave the way for a sustainable agreement.
Strategic Dispute Over Strait of Hormuz
One of the most sensitive points in the ongoing dispute is Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime passage through which a substantial portion of the world’s energy supplies flows. Baqaei emphasized that Iran does not respond positively to what it sees as threats or coercive tactics, stating that such approaches are unlikely to produce constructive outcomes.
Iran’s Proposal for Ending Conflict
Before the US announcement regarding naval escorts, Iran had already submitted a comprehensive proposal aimed at ending the conflict. The plan reportedly includes 14 key points focusing on de-escalation and restoring stability in the region.
According to Baqaei, the proposal was communicated to Washington through intermediaries in Pakistan, and a response has been received. However, details of the response have not been publicly disclosed, leaving uncertainty about whether the proposal will serve as a basis for renewed negotiations.
