Politics – BJP Alleges Vendetta as FIRs Filed Against Former AAP Leader
Politics – The political temperature rose sharply after fresh allegations emerged regarding the filing of cases against a former senior leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused AAP leadership of engaging in retaliatory actions following recent political defections.

BJP Raises Questions Over Timing of Police Action
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, alleging that the Punjab Police is being used to target political opponents. His remarks came after two First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered against Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak, who recently left AAP and joined the BJP.
Poonawalla expressed concern over what he described as politically motivated action, questioning why the cases surfaced only after Pathak’s departure from the party. He argued that if any wrongdoing had occurred earlier, action should have been taken at that time rather than after the shift in political alignment.
Allegations of Political Retaliation Intensify
According to Poonawalla, the development reflects a broader pattern of retaliation against leaders who have parted ways with AAP. He alleged that the party leadership, along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is involved in actions aimed at settling political scores.
He further claimed that Kejriwal has a history of targeting dissenting voices and political rivals. Drawing parallels with past incidents, Poonawalla said several former AAP members had faced similar treatment after leaving the party.
Questions Over Internal Party Practices
The BJP spokesperson also raised concerns about AAP’s internal functioning, suggesting that the party has not reflected on the reasons behind repeated exits of prominent leaders. He cited examples of past members who distanced themselves from AAP, alleging that many were subjected to pressure after voicing disagreements.
He added that instead of addressing internal issues, the party has allegedly chosen to pursue legal actions against former colleagues. Such steps, he claimed, point towards a governance approach that discourages dissent.
Details of FIRs Remain Limited
Sources indicate that the FIRs registered against Pathak involve non-bailable sections, although specific details about the charges have not yet been made public. The lack of clarity has further fuelled political speculation and debate.
As of now, there has been no official response from AAP leadership regarding the allegations made by BJP leaders. The situation continues to evolve as more information is expected to emerge in the coming days.
Recent Political Shifts Add to Tensions
The controversy comes shortly after a major setback for AAP in the Rajya Sabha. On April 24, seven out of the party’s ten members in the Upper House resigned, citing concerns over the party’s direction and adherence to its founding principles.
Among those who exited were Sandeep Pathak and several other leaders, many of whom represented Punjab. Their decision marked a significant shift in the political landscape, reducing AAP’s presence in the Rajya Sabha.
Following their resignation, the Rajya Sabha Chairman accepted their merger with the BJP, formally altering the party composition in the Upper House.
Broader Political Implications
The developments have intensified political rivalry between BJP and AAP, particularly in Punjab and Delhi. Analysts suggest that the situation may have wider implications for upcoming political strategies and alliances.
As both parties continue to exchange allegations, the focus remains on whether further details regarding the FIRs will clarify the circumstances or deepen the ongoing political confrontation
