Selection Strategy Under Review

Recent developments suggest that the Indian team management is carefully re-evaluating its squad composition for limited-overs cricket. KL Rahul is expected to retain his role as the primary wicketkeeper in ODIs, but the backup position is now under scrutiny. With performances being closely monitored, selectors are weighing current form heavily in their decision-making process.

Pant, who has held the backup role in recent times, is facing increased competition. His place is no longer assured, particularly as the team prepares for a demanding international schedule and long-term tournament planning.

Pant’s Form Raises Questions

Rishabh Pant’s recent outings have been inconsistent, particularly in the ongoing IPL season. In eight matches, he has scored 189 runs at an average of 27, with a strike rate of 126.85. While there have been moments where he looked promising, he has struggled to deliver sustained performances.

Notably, Pant has not featured in an ODI match since August 2024. This gap, combined with fluctuating form, has raised concerns among selectors who are prioritizing match readiness and reliability. Although Pant remains a player of significant talent, his recent numbers have not strengthened his case.

Samson Builds Strong Case

In contrast, Sanju Samson has delivered impressive performances across formats, boosting his chances of reclaiming a spot in the ODI squad. Carrying forward his momentum from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Samson has been in excellent form during IPL 2026.

He has accumulated 304 runs in eight matches at an average of 50.67 and an aggressive strike rate of 169.83. His performances include two centuries, underlining his ability to play impactful innings. This consistency has positioned him as a strong contender for the wicketkeeper role.

Comparing Career Numbers

Pant’s overall ODI record includes 871 runs in 31 matches, averaging 33.50 with one century and five half-centuries. Despite being once regarded as a long-term successor to MS Dhoni, he has yet to establish consistent dominance in the format.

Samson, meanwhile, has featured in 16 ODIs since making his debut in 2021. He has scored 510 runs at an impressive average of 56.67, including one century and three fifties. His superior average and recent performances have made a compelling argument in his favor.

Focus on Form and Future Planning

Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are believed to be emphasizing recent form and adaptability as key criteria in team selection. With India aiming to build a stable core for future tournaments, including the 2027 ODI World Cup, every position is being evaluated with long-term strategy in mind.

The management’s approach reflects a shift toward rewarding consistent performers, especially in high-pressure situations. Samson’s recent displays align well with this direction.

Competition Set to Intensify

As India’s international calendar becomes increasingly demanding, competition for places within the squad is expected to grow sharper. The wicketkeeper’s role, in particular, remains one of the most closely contested positions.

With both Pant and Samson possessing unique strengths, the final decision will likely depend on who maintains form and delivers under pressure in the coming months. For now, Samson’s upward trajectory has given him a slight edge in the race.
