Heatwave – Gig Workers Struggle to Cope With Extreme Urban Temperatures
Heatwave – As soaring temperatures grip the capital, pushing the mercury close to 45°C, thousands of gig workers are enduring harsh realities on the streets. Delivery riders, courier staff, and app-based service providers continue their daily routines despite the intense heat, often without adequate protection or support systems.

Rising Demand During Peak Heat Hours
The most difficult part of the day, according to many workers, falls between noon and 4 pm. During these hours, not only does the sun become unbearable, but customer demand for food and grocery deliveries also reaches its highest point.
Ramesh, a delivery rider who spends nearly 10 hours navigating the city’s roads, explains that this period is both crucial and punishing. He notes that while order volumes increase significantly, the conditions make it physically exhausting to continue working outdoors. Yet, logging off is rarely an option due to performance-based incentives tied to completed deliveries.
Pressure of Targets and Penalties
Many gig workers report that failing to meet delivery targets can lead to reduced earnings or fewer future assignments. Delays caused by traffic congestion, fatigue from prolonged exposure to heat, or short breaks for rest often result in penalties.
Workers say this system leaves little room for flexibility. Even when conditions are extreme, they are expected to maintain efficiency, which adds to the stress of working under already challenging circumstances.
Limited Access to Relief Measures
Access to cooling facilities remains limited for most workers. While some companies have announced initiatives such as rest points or cooling centers, workers claim that these measures are either insufficient or not easily accessible.
In the absence of proper facilities, many rely on petrol stations, roadside vendors, or shaded areas to take brief breaks. Hydration also becomes a daily concern, as constant movement and high temperatures increase the risk of dehydration.
Shaikh Saluddin, a representative of a gig workers’ union, highlights that while there have been announcements about support measures, their implementation on the ground has been minimal.
Growing Health Concerns
Medical risks linked to prolonged exposure to heat are becoming more evident. Workers face issues such as heat exhaustion, dehydration, and fatigue, which can affect both their immediate health and long-term well-being.
Although some platforms have issued safety advisories or introduced minor adjustments in policies, workers believe these steps are not enough to address the seriousness of the situation. The lack of structured health safeguards continues to leave them vulnerable.
Economic Challenges of Gig Work
The ongoing heatwave has also drawn attention to the financial instability associated with gig-based employment. Unlike traditional jobs, gig workers often do not have access to fixed salaries, paid leave, or health benefits.
This creates a difficult situation where workers must choose between earning a livelihood and protecting their health. As one rider puts it, stopping work means losing income, while continuing exposes them to extreme physical strain.
Need for Stronger Support Systems
The current conditions underline the need for more robust support mechanisms for gig workers. Experts suggest that companies and policymakers must consider practical solutions such as accessible cooling stations, flexible working hours during peak heat, and better health protections.
As climate conditions become more unpredictable, ensuring worker safety and sustainability will be essential for maintaining the efficiency of urban service networks.
