Tourism –  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the strategic and economic importance of India’s northeastern states, describing them as the country’s “Ashtalakshmi,” a symbol of prosperity and diversity. Speaking at the concluding ceremony of Sikkim’s 50th statehood anniversary celebrations, he reiterated the Centre’s commitment to accelerating development across the region.

Focus on Connectivity to Strengthen Tourism

Addressing the gathering, the prime minister underlined that tourism remains central to Sikkim’s economy. He said the government is prioritising improved connectivity to make the state more accessible to visitors. Plans include a new expressway linking Bagdogra in West Bengal to Sikkim, along with a proposed ring road in Gangtok aimed at easing travel within the capital.

He also mentioned upcoming ropeway and skyway projects designed to enhance travel experiences and improve mobility in hilly areas. Another proposed expressway in Nathula is expected to further boost tourist arrivals by making remote locations easier to reach.

Northeast Positioned as Growth Engine

Referring to the broader northeastern region, Modi emphasised that it holds significant potential for future development. He reiterated the government’s approach of “Act East, Act Fast,” signalling a push to integrate the region more closely with national and international economic networks.

He said that states like Sikkim are set to play a major role in sustainable and forward-looking growth, particularly through initiatives such as organic farming. According to him, these efforts not only support local livelihoods but also position the region as a model for environmentally responsible development.

Natural Beauty and Conservation Highlighted

The prime minister also spoke about Sikkim’s rich biodiversity and environmental consciousness. He praised the state’s clean environment, noting that both residents and local authorities have contributed significantly to preserving nature.

“Nature and culture thrive together in Sikkim,” he said, pointing to the state’s clean roads and fresh air as indicators of strong community participation in conservation efforts. He added that such qualities make Sikkim stand out as a destination that blends ecological preservation with cultural richness.

Expansion of Tourism and Homestay Projects

Highlighting future opportunities, Modi said Sikkim has strong potential in eco and wellness tourism. The government is supporting this sector by encouraging the construction of around 1,000 homestays across the state. These initiatives aim to provide tourists with authentic local experiences while generating income for residents.

He added that adventure tourism infrastructure is also being expanded, which is expected to attract a wider range of visitors, including those interested in outdoor and high-altitude activities.

Message of Unity and Cultural Integration

During his address, the prime minister described Sikkim as a reflection of national unity. He said the state embodies the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” particularly at a time when divisive narratives based on religion or politics are being debated in various parts of the country.

He also referred to Sikkim as the “heaven of the East,” encouraging tourists to explore its natural beauty, including its wide variety of orchids and scenic landscapes.

Boost for Sports and Youth Development

Earlier in the day, Modi interacted with young athletes and participated in a football session. He said the government is working to improve sports infrastructure in Sikkim, with a focus on nurturing talent in disciplines such as football and archery.

According to him, developing sports facilities will not only support aspiring athletes but also contribute to youth engagement and overall regional development.

Criticism of Past Governance

The prime minister also took a critical view of previous administrations, alleging that earlier governments had overlooked key development projects in Sikkim. He particularly mentioned gaps in healthcare infrastructure, stating that the current government is focused on improving medical services and ensuring affordability and accessibility for residents.

He concluded by reaffirming that sustained investment in infrastructure, tourism, and public services will be central to Sikkim’s continued growth.
