According to state media, the event coincided with the first anniversary of Russia regaining control of the Kursk region, a frontline area previously contested with Ukrainian forces. The recapture, dated April 26, 2025, is being commemorated as a significant military milestone.
Senior officials from both North Korea and Russia attended the event, including Russia’s defense minister and the speaker of its lower house of parliament. The presence of high-ranking delegates highlighted the importance both nations place on their growing partnership.
North Korea’s Role in the Conflict
Since 2024, North Korea has reportedly provided substantial military support to Russia, including sending approximately 15,000 troops along with conventional weaponry. South Korean intelligence estimates suggest that around 6,000 North Korean soldiers have either been killed or injured during the prolonged conflict.

In a separate interaction, Kim noted that Russia’s decision to send a high-level delegation to the ceremony demonstrated its commitment to maintaining close relations with North Korea.
