Bringing Stakeholders Together for Inclusive Sports

The programme was organised in collaboration with The Quantum Hub, Special Olympics Bharat, and The Accessibility Coalition. It gathered policymakers, sports professionals, inclusion advocates, and athletes to examine how sports environments can become more accessible and equitable.

The initiative reflects a broader commitment by the India Autism Center to promote long-term inclusion through its vision of Samaavesh, a community-based residential ecosystem designed to support individuals with autism throughout their lives.

Honouring Young Athletes for Extraordinary Achievement

A key highlight of the event was a felicitation ceremony celebrating four young neurodivergent swimmers who recently completed a demanding 60-kilometre open water relay across the Palk Strait. The swimmers—Meka Sri Ashvath (11), Gunturu Lav (9), Gunturu Kush (9), and Thanvesh Navin (10)—completed the journey between Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu and Talaimannar in Sri Lanka and back within 18 hours.

Their accomplishment stands out not only for the physical endurance required but also for their age and determination. The athletes have been training under the guidance of Sathish Siavkumar at Yadhavi Sports Academy for Special Needs. Their progression from basic swimming lessons to participating in challenging open-water events reflects years of structured training and discipline.

Training Pathways and Competitive Exposure

The swimmers have also competed in events such as the 5 km Samudra Veer Porbandar Swimathon 2026, where they faced competitors significantly older than them. Their continued training now focuses on advanced ocean conditions, preparing them for further international-level participation.

Coaches and families shared insights into the athletes’ journeys during a dedicated session, highlighting the importance of early support systems, consistent training, and community encouragement in shaping their success.

Policy Dialogue on Accessibility and Inclusion

Beyond the celebration, the event featured a panel discussion involving experts from sports, policy, and accessibility sectors. The discussion focused on addressing gaps in infrastructure, improving training pathways, and ensuring equal opportunities for participation.

Speakers emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among institutions, government bodies, and private organisations to build a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem. Key themes included improving accessibility standards, strengthening grassroots programmes, and integrating inclusion into mainstream sports policies.

The Role of Sports in Personal Development

Organisers highlighted how sports can contribute to confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging among individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions. The achievements of the young swimmers were presented as examples of how the right opportunities and support can unlock potential.

Speakers also stressed that inclusion in sports should not remain limited to isolated initiatives. Instead, it should be embedded into the broader framework of sports development in India, ensuring long-term impact.

Moving Toward Systemic Change

The initiative underlined the importance of collaboration in driving meaningful change. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, it aimed to move the conversation from awareness to action.

Organisers noted that future efforts will continue to focus on building accessible infrastructure, supporting talent development, and encouraging participation at all levels. The long-term goal is to create an environment where ability is recognised and barriers to participation are systematically removed.

Through such initiatives, the India Autism Center and its partners are working toward a more inclusive sports landscape, where individuals of all abilities can participate, compete, and thrive.
