Travel – Indian Railways has announced a large-scale plan to operate 18,262 special train trips during the busy summer travel period, aiming to manage increased passenger demand and improve connectivity on heavily used routes. The initiative, confirmed by the Ministry of Railways on Friday, is part of a broader strategy to ensure smoother travel during one of the year’s most crowded seasons.
Expanded Services to Meet Seasonal Demand
The special train operations will run between April 15 and July 15, 2026, covering the peak months when millions of passengers travel across the country. According to officials, 11,878 trips have already been scheduled, while the remaining services will be introduced gradually in the coming weeks.
The decision follows a detailed review meeting led by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi. Authorities emphasized that the additional trains are intended to reduce congestion, especially on routes that witness heavy seasonal traffic due to vacations, festivals, and family travel.
Improved Planning and Resource Availability
Railway officials noted that the large number of special services has been made possible through better planning and efficient use of resources. Increased availability of train coaches, improved scheduling systems, and continuous monitoring of operations have contributed to this expanded capacity.

Special attention has been given to managing passenger flow at key railway stations across the country. These include major hubs such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Bengaluru, all of which typically experience significant crowd pressure during the summer months.
At stations like Udhna in Surat, additional arrangements have already been introduced. These include real-time crowd monitoring, increased staff presence, and improved coordination of train arrivals and departures. Such measures are designed to prevent overcrowding and ensure orderly movement of passengers.
Assistance for Passengers Traveling Home
A significant portion of summer travel demand comes from people returning to their hometowns. Recognizing this, the Railways has taken steps to make boarding and travel more organized and comfortable.
For example, on specific services like the Udhna–Thave Tapti Ganga Express, Railway Protection Force personnel have been deployed to assist passengers during boarding. Their role includes guiding travelers, maintaining queues, and ensuring that seating arrangements are followed properly.
Officials believe that such on-ground support can greatly reduce confusion and improve safety, particularly during peak hours when stations are crowded.
