Politics – Mayawati Advises Party Cadres Against Protests Over Women Bill

Politics – The leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Mayawati, on Wednesday urged her party workers to avoid organizing demonstrations following the recent setback of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill in Parliament, which was related to women’s reservation.

Party Stance Remains Consistent

In her communication, Mayawati made it clear that the party’s position on women’s reservation has not changed. She reiterated that while the BSP supports the idea of reserving seats for women, it firmly believes that the quota must include a separate allocation for women belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.

She emphasized that this view had already been outlined earlier in April and asked party members to ensure that this message reaches all levels of the organization. According to her, clarity on the issue is essential to prevent any misunderstanding among workers and supporters.

Call for Discipline Within the Party

At the same time, Mayawati strongly advised against holding protests or public demonstrations on the matter. She stressed that maintaining discipline within the party is crucial, especially when dealing with sensitive political issues. Her message underlined that any form of agitation could create confusion or weaken the party’s structured approach to the issue.

This directive reflects a broader effort to keep the party’s activities aligned with its leadership’s decisions rather than allowing spontaneous reactions to recent political developments.

Concerns Over Representation

Earlier this month, Mayawati had expressed concern that without a sub-quota, women from marginalized communities might not receive fair representation in legislative bodies. She argued that a general reservation for women, without internal categorization, could lead to unequal benefits, leaving disadvantaged groups underrepresented.

The BSP has consistently maintained that social balance must be preserved within any reservation policy. According to Mayawati, ensuring representation for all sections of society is essential for the credibility and effectiveness of such measures.

Demand for Increased Reservation

In addition to supporting the 33 percent reservation proposal, Mayawati has also raised the demand for increasing the quota to 50 percent, in line with the population share of women. She has previously stated that other political parties have not supported this proposal due to political constraints and competing interests.

Her remarks suggest that the BSP intends to continue advocating for a broader and more inclusive framework for women’s participation in governance.

Focus on Organizational Strength

In her latest message, Mayawati also mentioned that she would be traveling to Delhi for party-related engagements. Alongside this, she directed party workers to concentrate on strengthening the organization at the grassroots level.

She encouraged them to expand the party’s support base and actively communicate the achievements of the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh. According to her, highlighting past governance records can play a key role in building public trust ahead of future elections.

Highlighting Development Work

Mayawati pointed out that several major infrastructure initiatives in Uttar Pradesh, including expressways and the Noida airport project, were originally planned during the BSP’s tenure. She claimed that these projects could have been completed earlier if not for obstacles from the then central government.

By drawing attention to these developments, she urged party workers to present the BSP’s governance record as a model of progress and efficiency.

Emphasis on Governance Principles

Concluding her message, Mayawati asserted that balanced development, improved law and order, and inclusive growth are achievable only through governance based on the rule of law. She maintained that this principle has been central to the BSP’s approach and remains its guiding philosophy.

Her statement reflects the party’s attempt to position itself as a stable and development-focused alternative in the political landscape, particularly with upcoming electoral challenges in mind.
