Politics – Indian political developments and election governance concerns- The Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday addressed controversy surrounding his recent comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that his words had been misunderstood and taken out of context. He emphasized that he never intended to label the Prime Minister as a “terrorist,” and clarified that his remarks were directed at what he described as a broader climate of fear in the country.
Clarification on Controversial Statement
Speaking at a press briefing, Kharge explained that his original statement was meant to reflect concerns about how certain sections of society feel pressured or intimidated. He stressed that his criticism was not personal but aimed at highlighting what he sees as an environment where people may hesitate to express dissent. According to him, the intention was to draw attention to systemic issues rather than target any individual.
Allegations Regarding Institutional Independence
The Congress leader went on to raise questions about the functioning of key institutions in the country. He alleged that agencies responsible for investigation and governance were not operating independently and were instead influenced by political considerations. Kharge also expressed concerns about the role of the Election Commission, suggesting that it was not maintaining the level of neutrality expected of it. During the interaction, Kharge pointed to what he described as violations of the Model Code of Conduct in the ongoing election campaign. Position on Women’s Reservation Bill
Kharge also spoke about the Women’s Reservation Bill, reiterating that his party has consistently supported measures to enhance representation for women in Parliament. He noted that the Congress had previously backed the proposal and called for its implementation across all Lok Sabha constituencies.
However, he criticized the government for linking the bill with the delimitation of constituencies. He stated that his party’s objection was not to the reservation itself, but to the inclusion of additional conditions that could delay its implementation. He further accused the ruling alliance of misrepresenting the opposition’s position on this issue.

The Congress chief alleged that attempts were being made to secure political support through inducements offered to Members of Parliament. He claimed that a combination of financial influence, organizational strength, and the use of investigative agencies was being employed to gain an advantage.

He also stated that increasing coordination among opposition parties had created concern within the ruling establishment.
According to Kharge, this growing unity has led to attempts to create divisions among rival groups. He maintained that despite these challenges, opposition parties remain focused on presenting a collective alternative to voters.
