FireSafety – Delhi LG Reviews Emergency Preparedness at Fire Academy
FireSafety – Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday visited the Fire Service Management Academy (FSMA) in Rohini to evaluate the preparedness of the Delhi Fire Service and review the effectiveness of its training systems. The visit focused on strengthening fire safety measures, improving response capabilities, and identifying gaps in enforcement across the city.
Inspection of Training and Operational Preparedness
During his visit, the Lieutenant Governor closely examined the academy’s training framework and operational readiness. Officials briefed him on the structure of training modules designed to equip personnel with modern firefighting skills. He also observed how the department prepares its teams to handle emergencies, particularly in densely populated urban environments.
The academy demonstrated various emergency response techniques, giving a practical overview of how firefighters are trained to respond quickly and efficiently. The emphasis remained on improving coordination, reducing response time, and ensuring that personnel are prepared for a wide range of fire-related situations.
Advanced Equipment Showcased in Live Demonstrations
A series of live demonstrations formed a key part of the visit. These included firefighting drills and rescue operations using advanced tools and machinery. Among the highlights was the Articulating Water Tower, an indigenously developed system capable of reaching heights of up to 55 metres, making it particularly useful in tackling fires in high-rise buildings.
Other demonstrations featured remote-controlled firefighting devices, compact robotic units, and turntable ladders sourced from Germany. These technologies showcased how innovation is increasingly being integrated into fire response systems, allowing safer and more efficient operations in challenging environments.
Emphasis on Preparedness Ahead of Summer Season
Interacting with trainee officers, the Lieutenant Governor underlined the importance of readiness, especially as temperatures rise during the summer months—a period typically associated with an increase in fire incidents. He stressed that preparedness must go beyond routine drills and should include real-time responsiveness and adaptability.
He encouraged personnel to stay vigilant and maintain high standards of discipline and coordination. Acknowledging the demanding nature of their work, he expressed confidence in their professionalism and assured continued administrative support to strengthen their capabilities.
Review Meeting Highlights Infrastructure and Compliance Issues
Prior to the academy visit, the Lieutenant Governor chaired a detailed review meeting with senior officials of the Delhi Fire Service. The discussion covered critical issues such as infrastructure upgrades, manpower requirements, and improvements in emergency response systems.
A significant concern raised during the meeting was the operation of several institutions without valid fire safety clearances. It was noted that establishments such as schools, hospitals, hotels, and entertainment venues functioning without mandatory No Objection Certificates pose a serious threat to public safety.
Directive to Strengthen Enforcement and Speed Up Clearances
Reinforcing the importance of fire safety as a core aspect of urban governance, the Lieutenant Governor directed authorities to intensify inspections across the city. He emphasized that compliance should not be treated as optional, particularly in places that accommodate large numbers of people.
Officials were instructed to expedite the processing of pending fire safety clearance applications to reduce delays for compliant institutions. At the same time, strict action was ordered against those found violating established norms.
Focus on Transparent and Efficient Systems
The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the need for a transparent and time-bound enforcement mechanism. He stated that while compliance must be strictly enforced, the process should remain accessible and efficient for applicants seeking approvals.
By encouraging a balanced approach that combines strict regulation with administrative support, the government aims to improve overall fire safety standards while ensuring that institutions can meet requirements without unnecessary hurdles.
