Conflict – Fresh protests erupt in Manipur after children killed in blast
Conflict – Tensions remained high in Manipur’s Imphal region after violent confrontations broke out between security forces and demonstrators protesting the deaths of two children in a recent explosion. The incident, which occurred earlier this month, has triggered widespread anger and sustained public demonstrations across several valley districts.

Protests escalate after tragic blast
The unrest follows a bomb explosion in Bishnupur district’s Tronglaobi area on April 7, where two children lost their lives. The tragedy quickly sparked outrage among local residents, leading to repeated protests demanding accountability and stronger security measures.
In response to the incident, protest gatherings have continued across the valley, with citizens expressing grief as well as frustration over recurring violence in the region. Many participants have called for immediate steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
Torch rally turns confrontational
On a recent evening, a torch procession covering nearly seven kilometres—from Mayai Lambi to Keishamthong—drew large crowds. What began as a symbolic demonstration later escalated into confrontation when sections of the crowd attempted to move beyond the permitted route.
Authorities stated that protesters tried to push towards Keisampat, a sensitive area that houses important government offices, including administrative buildings and political party headquarters. Security personnel intervened as the gathering crossed restricted limits.
Security forces respond with crowd control measures
Police officials reported that the situation became difficult to manage as the number of demonstrators grew significantly larger than anticipated. In an attempt to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation, security forces used tear gas.
Officials maintained that the measures were necessary to restore order and protect key installations. However, eyewitness accounts suggested that tensions remained high even after the initial confrontation, with sporadic incidents reported in nearby areas.
Curfew restrictions continue across districts
To maintain control over the situation, authorities have enforced a nightly curfew across all five valley districts. The restrictions, which remain in place from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m., limit public movement and gatherings during evening and nighttime hours.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors during curfew periods, while security forces continue patrols to prevent further unrest. The administration has indicated that the curfew will remain until the situation stabilizes.
Arrests made for violations and damage
In a parallel development, Manipur Police confirmed the arrest of 19 individuals from different parts of Imphal West district. The arrests were linked to violations of curfew rules, road blockades, and alleged damage to public infrastructure during protests.
Authorities emphasized that strict action would be taken against those found engaging in unlawful activities, while also urging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies during this sensitive period.
Separate vigil held to mourn other victims
Amid ongoing tensions, another solemn gathering took place in Ukhrul district headquarters. Residents organized a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to two Tangkhul Naga civilians who were killed in an ambush in the TM Kasom area on April 18.
The vigil reflected the broader climate of concern in the state, where multiple incidents of violence have added to public anxiety. Community members called for peace and unity while remembering the victims.
Situation remains fragile
With protests continuing and security measures tightened, the situation in Manipur remains delicate. Authorities are closely monitoring developments, while appeals for calm have been issued from various quarters.
Observers note that restoring normalcy will require both effective law enforcement and sustained dialogue with affected communities.
