Terrorism – Relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated sharply following a deadly incident in Kashmir that claimed 26 lives, most of them Hindu tourists. Background of the Kashmir Dispute
Kashmir has remained a contentious region since 1947, when India and Pakistan gained independence from British rule. Both countries claim the territory in full, although it is divided between them. The region, which has a Muslim-majority population, has witnessed decades of unrest and armed conflict.
An insurgency that began in 1989 continues to shape the security landscape. Various militant groups have demanded either independence for Kashmir or its merger with Pakistan. India has consistently accused Pakistan of supporting and training these groups, while Pakistan has denied any involvement. Details of the Pahalgam Attack
The attack occurred on April 22 near the tourist destination of Pahalgam. Armed assailants emerged from nearby forested areas and opened fire on visitors gathered in the Baisaran meadow. Survivors reported that the attackers separated men from women and children before shooting them at close range.
The victims included 24 Indian nationals, one Nepali citizen, and a local Muslim guide. Notably, there were no security personnel stationed at the meadow at the time, despite it being a known tourist area. The attackers fled into the surrounding dense forest immediately after the incident.
Claims and Identity of the Attackers
A group calling itself The Resistance Front initially claimed responsibility for the assault. The organization is believed to have links with Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based group designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations. However, the group later withdrew its claim after facing widespread condemnation.
Indian authorities reported that three suspected attackers were killed in a security operation conducted in a wildlife park near Srinagar. According to officials, forensic analysis confirmed that weapons recovered from the deceased were used in the Pahalgam attack. The government stated that all three individuals were involved directly in the incident.
Investigation and Arrests
Security agencies launched a large-scale investigation following the attack. Around 1,500 individuals were detained for questioning as part of the probe. In June, two local residents were arrested for allegedly providing shelter to the attackers.
The National Investigation Agency stated that the suspects revealed the identities of the three gunmen during interrogation. Officials also claimed that the attackers were Pakistani nationals associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba. Investigators indicated that six individuals in total were involved in planning and executing the attack, including a handler whose location remains unknown.
Diplomatic Fallout and Military Escalation
The incident triggered a series of retaliatory actions from both countries. India and Pakistan expelled diplomats, restricted trade ties, and closed their airspace to each other. India also suspended the Indus Water Treaty, a longstanding agreement governing water sharing between the two nations.
In response, Pakistan halted the Simla Agreement, which outlines the framework for bilateral negotiations on Kashmir. Tensions escalated further when India conducted airstrikes targeting what it described as militant infrastructure within Pakistan. Islamabad responded with military action, leading to a four-day confrontation.
The clashes resulted in more than 70 deaths on both sides, marking the most intense conflict since the Kargil war in 1999.
Status of the Investigation
Officials in India have indicated that the investigation is largely complete following the killing of the three suspected attackers. However, authorities emphasized that efforts are ongoing to establish the broader conspiracy, including alleged external involvement.
A senior security official noted that while operational aspects of the case have been resolved, legal proceedings will focus on proving the larger network behind the attack. The issue continues to carry significant diplomatic and security implications for both countries.
