Technology – X Faces Global Outage as Thousands Report Access Issues

Technology –  Thousands of users across the globe experienced difficulties accessing X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, on the morning of April 17. Reports of the disruption began surfacing early in the day, with many users stating that they were unable to view posts or refresh their feeds on the mobile application.

Widespread User Complaints Emerge

According to data from outage monitoring platform Downdetector, more than 5,000 users had reported issues by approximately 6:52 am IST. The complaints indicated a range of technical problems, with a significant portion of users struggling to load content, particularly posts from accounts associated with the platform’s owner, Elon Musk.

The outage appeared to affect both app and web users, though the nature of the issues varied. Some users reported that the application failed to refresh timelines, while others said the website itself was not functioning properly.

Breakdown of Reported Issues

Downdetector’s analysis showed that 37 percent of affected users encountered problems while using the mobile application. Around 27 percent reported difficulties in loading their home feed or timeline, which is a central feature of the platform. Meanwhile, 26 percent of users said they faced issues accessing the website version of X.

These figures suggest that the disruption was not limited to a single feature or device type, indicating a broader technical issue affecting the platform’s infrastructure.

No Official Statement from X

Despite the scale of the outage, there was no immediate response or official confirmation from X regarding the cause of the disruption. The lack of communication left users speculating about the reason behind the sudden service interruption.

Such outages often lead to increased user frustration, especially given the platform’s role as a primary source of real-time information and communication for millions worldwide.

Recent Outage Adds to Concerns

This incident comes just two days after another significant outage on April 15, when over 17,000 users reported similar issues with the platform. That disruption also led to widespread complaints, with many users taking to alternative platforms to express their concerns.

The recurrence of outages within a short span has raised questions about the platform’s stability and reliability, particularly following ongoing changes and updates under its current ownership.

Users Turn to Alternatives for Updates

During the downtime, many users sought updates on other social media platforms and forums, highlighting the interconnected nature of digital communication today. Outage-tracking services like Downdetector once again played a key role in providing real-time insights into the scale and impact of the issue.

While such disruptions are not uncommon for large-scale digital platforms, repeated incidents can affect user trust and engagement over time.

Platform Stability Under Scrutiny

As X continues to evolve under new leadership, maintaining consistent performance remains critical. Frequent outages not only disrupt communication but also impact businesses, content creators, and organizations that rely on the platform for outreach and engagement.

It remains to be seen whether the company will address the issue publicly or implement measures to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
