MedicalNegligence – Elderly Woman’s Death Sparks Probe at BHU Trauma Centre

MedicalNegligence –  A 71-year-old woman’s death at the trauma centre of Banaras Hindu University has raised serious concerns, with her family alleging that a surgical error led to her worsening condition and eventual demise. The incident has prompted hospital authorities to initiate an internal inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.

Family Alleges Surgical Mix-Up During Treatment

The deceased, identified as Radhika Devi from Amritpur, had been admitted to the hospital on February 25 after experiencing symptoms linked to a spinal tumour. According to her grandson, Mrityunjay Pal, doctors had diagnosed her condition and recommended surgery to address the spinal issue.

However, when she was taken into the operation theatre on March 7, the family claims that the medical team carried out a procedure on her thigh instead of operating on her spine. Pal alleged that the error became apparent when no fracture or related issue was found in the thigh during the procedure.

Condition Reportedly Worsened After First Surgery

Following the alleged incorrect operation, the wound was reportedly stitched, and the patient was shifted out of intensive care. The family has claimed that her health began to decline soon after this procedure.

As her condition deteriorated, doctors performed another surgery on March 18. Despite continued medical care, Radhika Devi remained hospitalised and ultimately passed away on March 27.

Family members have expressed distress over what they describe as a preventable mistake, stating that the initial error may have contributed significantly to her declining health.

Hospital Authorities Order Inquiry Into Allegations

In response to the claims, the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) at BHU acknowledged receiving a formal complaint from the family. IMS Director M N Shankhwar confirmed that a four-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter.

The committee has been tasked with reviewing medical records, examining the sequence of events, and determining whether standard procedures were followed during the patient’s treatment. Officials have stated that further action will depend on the findings of this investigation.

Importance of Accountability in Healthcare Settings

Incidents such as this highlight the critical importance of strict adherence to medical protocols and effective communication within surgical teams. While investigations are still underway, the case underscores the need for transparency and accountability in healthcare institutions.

Medical experts often stress that surgical errors, though rare, can have severe consequences, especially in cases involving elderly patients or complex conditions like spinal tumours. Ensuring proper pre-operative verification and cross-checking procedures is essential to minimise risks.

Awaiting Findings and Possible Action

As the inquiry progresses, both the hospital administration and the patient’s family await clarity on what exactly transpired during the course of treatment. The findings of the committee are expected to shed light on whether there was any lapse in medical judgment or procedural oversight.

Authorities have indicated that appropriate measures will be taken once the report is submitted. Meanwhile, the case continues to draw attention to patient safety standards and the responsibility of healthcare providers to maintain the highest levels of care.
