AIAttack – Man Charged After Attempted Firebombing of OpenAI CEO Home
AIAttack – A 20-year-old man has been formally charged in the United States after allegedly carrying out a firebomb attack targeting the California residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Federal authorities say the suspect, identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama, traveled from Texas with the intent to harm Altman and carried materials linked to anti-AI extremism.

Federal Charges Filed After Coordinated Attack
According to prosecutors, Moreno-Gama faces serious federal charges, including destruction of property using explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm. The incident took place on Friday in San Francisco, where the accused allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at the gates of Altman’s home before fleeing the scene.
Officials stated that while the attack caused property damage, no injuries were reported. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that violence cannot be justified as a form of disagreement, regardless of whether the issue involves politics, technology, or any other matter.
Suspect Allegedly Targeted OpenAI Headquarters
Investigators revealed that after the initial attack, Moreno-Gama proceeded to OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco. There, he reportedly attempted to break into the building by smashing glass doors with a chair. Authorities say he declared his intention to set the premises on fire and harm individuals inside.
Police detained him at the scene and recovered several items, including a container of kerosene, a lighter, and a written document titled “Your Last Warning.” The contents of the document have become a key part of the investigation.
Anti-AI Document Raises Alarm
The document allegedly found in Moreno-Gama’s possession outlined strong opposition to artificial intelligence and included references to violence against executives in the AI industry. Prosecutors claim it listed names and addresses believed to belong to multiple technology leaders and investors.
Parts of the text reportedly discussed perceived threats posed by AI to humanity. Authorities also noted that the suspect appeared to acknowledge his intention to kill Altman within the document, ending it with a statement suggesting a conditional reconsideration if the intended target survived.
Rising Tensions Around Artificial Intelligence
The case comes at a time when artificial intelligence is facing growing scrutiny and public debate. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has seen rapid growth and increasing influence, making its leadership more visible—and at times, controversial.
Critics have raised concerns about the societal impact of AI, including job displacement, misinformation risks, and ethical considerations. Some opposition has intensified following reports that OpenAI has collaborated with the US Department of Defense, a move that has drawn criticism from certain groups.
Sam Altman Responds Publicly
In response to the incident, Sam Altman addressed the situation in a personal blog post. He shared an image of his family, expressing hope that such humanizing moments might discourage future acts of violence.
Altman acknowledged that skepticism toward technology is understandable but urged for calmer discussions. He reiterated his belief that technological progress, despite its challenges, has the potential to improve lives in meaningful ways.
OpenAI’s Expanding Influence and Market Value
The attack also highlights the growing prominence of OpenAI in the global technology landscape. The company recently reported a valuation of $852 billion following a major funding round. This surge reflects both the increasing demand for AI solutions and the rising costs associated with developing advanced computing systems.
ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship product, continues to dominate the consumer AI market, reportedly serving over 900 million weekly active users. Subscription numbers have also climbed, with tens of millions of users paying for premium services. Additionally, the platform’s search capabilities have seen significant growth over the past year.
Broader Concerns About Extremism and Technology
Authorities have pointed out that this case is part of a broader pattern of incidents in the US where individuals have targeted prominent figures over ideological disagreements. Law enforcement agencies are increasingly monitoring threats linked to technological advancements and their societal impact.
The investigation into Moreno-Gama’s actions remains ongoing, with officials stressing the importance of addressing both security risks and the underlying tensions surrounding emerging technologies.
