LaborUnrest – Worker Protests Persist in Noida Despite Wage Increase Announcement
LaborUnrest – Protests by factory workers continued in Noida’s Phase 2 Hosiery Complex on Tuesday, even after the state government announced a revision in minimum wages. Groups of workers assembled at several points during the morning hours, with some incidents of stone-throwing reported, prompting a strong police presence across the area.

Police Presence Intensified to Control Situation
Authorities deployed a large number of personnel to maintain order and prevent further disturbances. Officials stated that while workers attempted to gather at multiple locations, police teams intervened quickly, dispersing the crowds after brief discussions. Route marches were carried out from early morning as a precautionary measure to discourage escalation and reassure local residents.
Background of Violence and Arrests
The current tensions stem from clashes that broke out a day earlier. On Monday, confrontations between workers and law enforcement turned violent, with incidents of stone-pelting and vehicles being set ablaze. According to police data, over 300 individuals have been taken into custody in connection with the unrest. Investigations are ongoing to identify those involved in organizing the violence.
Government Engages Stakeholders for Resolution
Senior officials confirmed that a committee set up by the Uttar Pradesh government is actively engaging with worker representatives, industrial associations, and other stakeholders. The aim is to address concerns raised by labor groups and find a workable solution. Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh appealed to workers to resume duties and cooperate in restoring normalcy in the district.
Digital Mobilisation Under Scrutiny
Authorities have also raised concerns about the role of digital platforms in mobilizing protesters. Several WhatsApp groups are under investigation, with officials suspecting that QR codes were used to coordinate gatherings. Police are examining the origin of these groups and possible financial backing behind the mobilisation efforts. So far, seven FIRs have been registered in relation to the incidents.
Wage Revision Announced Amid Ongoing Tensions
In response to worker demands, the state government recently approved an interim increase of approximately 21 percent in minimum wages for workers in Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad. The revised pay structure, effective from April 1, sets monthly wages between Rs 13,690 for unskilled laborers and Rs 16,868 for skilled workers. Despite this move, protests have continued, indicating that some concerns remain unresolved.
Political Reactions Add to Debate
The situation has also triggered a political exchange between ruling and opposition parties. Government representatives have suggested that certain groups may be attempting to fuel unrest for political reasons. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have criticized the administration, arguing that timely intervention could have prevented the situation from escalating.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned the government’s handling of the issue, stating that labeling the protests as a conspiracy diverts attention from genuine concerns. He pointed out that rising inflation has placed additional pressure on workers, making their demands understandable. Yadav also remarked that the committee now engaging with labor representatives could have been formed earlier to avoid conflict.
Situation Remains Under Watch
As tensions persist, authorities continue to monitor developments closely. Security measures remain in place, and officials have emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving the dispute. While the wage hike is seen as a step toward addressing worker grievances, the ongoing protests suggest that further discussions may be needed to bring lasting stability.
