Wildlife – Preparations for the Ardh Kumbh Mela scheduled in Haridwar in early 2027 have begun to gather pace, with authorities focusing on ensuring the safety of millions of expected visitors. Among the key concerns is the risk posed by wild animals entering areas where pilgrims and religious groups will gather. In response, the Uttarakhand Forest Department has outlined a series of preventive steps aimed at reducing the chances of human-wildlife encounters during the event.

Focus on Preventing Wildlife Movement Near Camp Areas

A major part of the plan involves developing infrastructure to limit the movement of animals into sensitive zones. Officials have confirmed that a two-kilometre patrolling track will be built near the Bairagi Camp area, where a large number of sadhus and devotees are expected to stay. The purpose of this track is to create a monitored boundary that discourages animals such as elephants and leopards from entering the camp vicinity.

The Bairagi Camp lies close to forested stretches that serve as natural pathways for wildlife. These corridors are regularly used by elephants, deer, leopards, and blue bulls, making the area particularly vulnerable during large public gatherings. By strengthening surveillance in this zone, authorities aim to minimize risks without disturbing the ecological balance.

Budget Allocation and Construction Plan

To implement the project, a budget of ₹40.99 lakh has been approved under the Kumbh Mela Fund. The track will be constructed using riverbed material along the banks of the Ganga, extending up to the Najibabad bridge. This route has been carefully chosen to cover key entry points where animals are most likely to approach human settlements.

Officials involved in the planning process have indicated that the construction work will be completed well before the start of the Mela. This will allow sufficient time to test and fine-tune monitoring systems before the arrival of pilgrims.
