Democracy – Congress Leaders Launch Protest Over Rajya Sabha Nomination Dispute
Democracy – The Congress party in Madhya Pradesh organized a “Loktantra Bachao Satyagraha” in Bhopal on Thursday, raising concerns over the recent developments linked to the Rajya Sabha election process. The demonstration was led by senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh and drew participation from several party leaders, workers, and supporters, including Rajya Sabha nominee Meenakshi Natarajan and Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan National Chairperson Sunil Pawar.

Protest Focuses on Election Process
The gathering took place at Roshanpura Crossing in the state capital, where Congress leaders voiced objections regarding the handling of the Rajya Sabha election. Addressing party workers and supporters, Meenakshi Natarajan questioned the circumstances surrounding the nomination and election process, alleging that efforts were made to influence the outcome despite the political arithmetic in the state assembly.
According to Natarajan, the Congress held a numerical advantage in the legislature, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) proceeded with an additional candidate. She argued that this decision raised legitimate questions about how electoral success was expected to be achieved under such circumstances.
Allegations Against Election Authorities
During her speech, Natarajan also expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of the election process. She claimed that Congress representatives were not given adequate consideration during proceedings and alleged that concerns submitted by the party were not properly addressed before a decision was announced.
The Congress leader said these developments had increased apprehensions within the party regarding transparency and fairness in the electoral mechanism. She maintained that democratic institutions must function independently and ensure equal treatment for all stakeholders involved in the process.
Response to Political Accusations
Natarajan further addressed allegations linking her to a legal notice connected to a case in Hyderabad. She rejected the claims and stated that the issue related to a period before she assumed responsibility as the party’s in-charge for Telangana.
She asserted that attempts were being made to create a misleading political narrative around the matter. According to her, she had consistently supported the individual who was reportedly affected in the case and had no involvement in the circumstances being highlighted by political opponents.
Call for Democratic Resistance
Speaking during the protest, Natarajan said similar demonstrations were being conducted in different parts of the country. She described the movement as an effort to alert citizens about what Congress views as growing challenges to democratic principles.
Responding to BJP allegations that information had been concealed during the nomination process, Natarajan dismissed the accusations as baseless. She stated that the party intended to challenge such claims through constitutional and democratic means rather than confrontation.
She also emphasized the need for a peaceful political struggle, adding that issues related to alleged horse-trading and electoral practices should be addressed through lawful and non-violent methods while remaining within the framework of the Constitution.
Debate Extends Beyond Madhya Pradesh
Referring to political developments in Jharkhand, Natarajan said the ongoing Rajya Sabha election reflected a larger ideological contest. She contrasted the nomination of an independent candidate supported by the BJP with the rejection of another candidate whom she described as committed to constitutional values.
According to her, the developments highlighted broader questions about democratic representation and the direction of political discourse in the country.
Digvijaya Singh’s Remarks
Veteran Congress leader Digvijaya Singh described the Bhopal protest as the beginning of a wider campaign aimed at drawing national attention to what the party considers threats to democratic institutions.
Addressing supporters, Singh said the objective of the movement was to communicate Congress’s concerns regarding the functioning of democratic processes. He termed the protest an important first step in taking the party’s message to citizens across the country and encouraging public discussion on the state of democracy.
