Energy – Delhi Plans Multi-Level Strategy to Ease LPG Supply Pressure

Energy – The Delhi government has introduced a coordinated plan aimed at reducing strain on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supplies while strengthening the overall energy distribution system in the city.

Government outlines coordinated approach

The announcement was made on Friday during a press briefing by the Department of Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs. Officials explained that the initiative involves close coordination with the central government to implement policy-level measures that can stabilise LPG availability and prevent disruptions in supply.

According to the department, the capital currently has nearly 5.6 million domestic LPG connections. Authorities believe that better regulation and improved monitoring are necessary to ensure that these connections are used appropriately and not diverted for unintended purposes.

Focus on accurate registration of LPG connections

One of the key steps outlined in the strategy is ensuring that LPG connections are registered in the correct name of the user. Officials stressed that incorrect or outdated registration details often lead to misuse, including illegal diversion and duplication of connections.

Residents have been advised to verify and update their records where necessary. This move is expected to help authorities maintain accurate data and reduce the chances of irregularities in distribution.

Push for wider adoption of piped natural gas

Alongside efforts to streamline LPG usage, the government is also encouraging households to shift to piped natural gas (PNG) wherever infrastructure is available. Officials stated that the city’s gas pipeline network has expanded significantly and now covers all villages within Delhi’s jurisdiction.

The transition to PNG is being promoted as a long-term solution to ease pressure on LPG supplies. It is also seen as a more efficient and continuous source of fuel for households, reducing dependence on cylinder-based systems.

Increased targets for PNG connections

To accelerate the shift, authorities have set higher targets for new PNG connections. Before the current supply concerns, around 1,000 new connections were being added regularly. The revised target now aims for approximately 3,000 new connections.

Officials noted that 684 PNG connections were added in February alone, indicating gradual progress. The increased targets are expected to speed up adoption and help balance demand across different energy sources.

Monitoring systems and enforcement measures strengthened

As part of the strategy, a dedicated control room has been established to monitor the situation closely. This facility will collect feedback, address complaints, and track supply-related issues in real time.

Authorities also confirmed that enforcement mechanisms will be tightened further. Increased vigilance is expected to curb black marketing and prevent illegal practices that disrupt the supply chain. Regular inspections and stricter compliance checks are likely to be part of this effort.

Aim to ensure stable and transparent distribution

Officials emphasised that the overall objective of the plan is to create a stable and transparent distribution system for cooking fuel in the city. By combining policy coordination, infrastructure expansion, and stricter enforcement, the government aims to minimise supply-related challenges and ensure that households receive uninterrupted access to essential fuel.

The multi-pronged approach reflects a broader attempt to modernise energy usage patterns in Delhi while addressing immediate concerns related to LPG availability.
