Weather – Delhi Braces for Light Rain, Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Tuesday
Weather – Residents of Delhi are likely to experience light rain or drizzle on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a mostly cloudy sky and intermittent weather activity throughout the day. The change in weather is expected to bring brief spells of rainfall, particularly during the afternoon or evening hours.

Rain and Thunderstorm Activity Expected Later in the Day
According to the IMD, light showers may develop as the day progresses, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Wind speeds are expected to range between 20 and 30 kmph, with occasional gusts reaching up to 40 kmph. These conditions may lead to sudden changes in weather, prompting authorities to advise caution.
Earlier, a yellow alert had been issued for the national capital, indicating the possibility of thunderstorms and shifting weather patterns. Such alerts are meant to prepare residents for short-term disruptions caused by weather fluctuations.
Monday’s Weather Prompted Alert Upgrade
The advisory follows a spell of rain and strong winds that affected Delhi and nearby areas on Monday. Initially, the IMD had predicted light rainfall, but as weather conditions intensified, the alert level was raised from yellow to orange. This upgrade signaled a higher likelihood of moderate rainfall, lightning, and stronger winds.
The orange alert remained active until 6 p.m. on Monday, during which several areas experienced noticeable weather disturbances. These developments highlight the dynamic nature of current atmospheric conditions over the region.
Cloudy Skies with Brief Sunny Breaks
For Tuesday, the IMD expects generally cloudy skies, although short sunny intervals may occur. Scattered light rain is likely across different parts of the city, maintaining a relatively mild and variable weather pattern.
Residents have been advised to stay alert during periods of strong winds or thunderstorms, especially when outdoors. Sudden gusts and lightning could pose temporary risks, particularly in open areas.
Weather Systems Influencing Northern India
The current weather pattern has been linked to a western disturbance positioned over north Iran and the Caspian Sea region. In addition, a cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan is contributing to the instability in atmospheric conditions.
The IMD has also indicated that another western disturbance is expected to approach around April 2. This system may bring very light rainfall to Delhi on April 3 and 4, continuing the trend of fluctuating weather in the coming days.
Impact on Nearby Regions
The broader weather system is not limited to Delhi alone. Parts of Haryana and Rajasthan have also been placed under similar weather advisories. Areas including Farukhnagar, Kosali, Mahendargarh, Sohna, Rewari, Palwal, Narnaul, Bawal, and Nuh in Haryana, along with Bhiwadi and Khairthal in Rajasthan, may experience dust storms followed by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging between 60 and 80 kmph.
These developments suggest that northern India is currently under the influence of multiple active weather systems, leading to varied and sometimes intense conditions.
Temporary Relief for Air Quality
Alongside the weather changes, Delhi’s air quality is expected to improve slightly. Rainfall and stronger winds help disperse pollutants, offering short-term relief from poor air conditions.
Recent observations have shown that even light rain can lead to noticeable improvements in air quality levels. However, such relief is often temporary, as pollution levels tend to return to the “poor” or “very poor” categories once weather conditions stabilize.
Still, the combination of rain and wind plays a significant role in clearing pollutants from the atmosphere, making the air comparatively cleaner for brief periods.
