EnergySecurity – Government Assures Stable Fuel Supply Amid Panic Buying Concerns
EnergySecurity – India’s petroleum authorities have firmly stated that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) across the country, countering widespread rumors that triggered panic buying in several regions. The government described such claims as a coordinated attempt to spread misinformation and create unnecessary public anxiety.

Government Releases Stock Details to Calm Public Concerns
For the first time since tensions escalated in West Asia, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas disclosed detailed data on the nation’s fuel reserves. Officials confirmed that India currently holds enough crude oil and fuel stocks to meet demand for approximately 60 days. Additionally, arrangements have already been made to secure future supplies, ensuring continuity in the coming months.
Authorities emphasized that petrol pumps and LPG distributors nationwide are functioning normally. Reports of long queues and supply shortages were attributed to isolated incidents driven by panic purchases rather than actual disruptions in supply.
Oil Companies Confirm Uninterrupted Supply
State-run oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, reiterated that their operations remain unaffected. They confirmed that fuel distribution systems are running smoothly, with no need for rationing or restrictions at retail outlets.
To address logistical challenges faced by some smaller fuel stations, the government has extended credit support. Pump operators can now access more flexible payment timelines, ensuring they can continue lifting fuel stocks without financial constraints.
Strategic Reserves and Global Sourcing Strengthen Position
India’s energy security has been reinforced through diversified sourcing strategies. Despite disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions affecting traditional supply routes, the country has secured crude oil from multiple international suppliers. Officials stated that increased imports from alternative markets have compensated for any shortfall.
The ministry also highlighted that India possesses a total storage capacity equivalent to 74 days of consumption, including strategic reserves stored in underground facilities. Current stock levels, combined with ongoing procurement, provide a strong buffer against global uncertainties.
LPG Supply Strengthened Despite Import Challenges
On the LPG front, the government assured that supplies remain sufficient despite disruptions in key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. Around 800,000 tonnes of LPG shipments have already been secured from countries including the United States, Russia, and Australia.
Domestic production has also been ramped up significantly, now meeting a substantial portion of daily demand. This has reduced reliance on imports and improved supply stability. Authorities confirmed that roughly one month of LPG supply is already arranged, with additional shipments continuously being finalized.
Rising Demand Driven by Panic Buying Now Stabilizing
Officials acknowledged that demand for LPG cylinders had briefly surged due to panic ordering. However, supply chains remained intact, and oil companies increased deliveries to meet the temporary spike. Daily cylinder distribution has since returned to normal levels, indicating that the situation is stabilizing.
Measures have also been introduced to prevent hoarding and black marketing, including adjustments in commercial cylinder allocations in coordination with state governments.
No Need for Emergency Measures, Says Government
Unlike some countries that have implemented rationing, vehicle restrictions, or emergency declarations due to fuel shortages, India has not found it necessary to adopt such measures. Officials stressed that the country’s refining capacity is operating above full utilization, ensuring steady production of fuels.
The government urged citizens to rely on verified information and avoid reacting to unverified social media posts. It also warned that strict action would be taken against those spreading false claims intended to disrupt public confidence.
Natural Gas Supply Also Remains Stable
In addition to petroleum products, the supply of natural gas remains steady. Domestic production meets a significant share of the country’s requirements, reducing dependence on imports. Authorities clarified that promoting piped natural gas (PNG) is part of a long-term strategy for affordability and convenience, not a response to any LPG shortage.
With robust reserves, diversified sourcing, and strong refining capacity, officials reiterated that India’s fuel supply remains secure despite global uncertainties.
