Diplomacy – Congress Criticises Centre Over Pakistan’s Mediation Role

Diplomacy –  The Congress party on Thursday launched a sharp criticism of the central government, questioning its foreign policy approach after reports suggested Pakistan’s involvement as a mediator in the ongoing West Asia conflict. The opposition described the situation as a setback for India’s diplomatic standing and raised concerns over how a country long accused of sponsoring terrorism could be considered for such a role.

Congress Questions India’s Diplomatic Standing

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the development reflects poorly on India’s international outreach. He argued that Pakistan’s emergence as a facilitator in sensitive geopolitical matters signals a decline in India’s influence in the region.

Ramesh also pointed out that Pakistan has a history of supporting extremist activities and harbouring globally designated terrorists. According to him, allowing such a country to act as a mediator raises serious questions about global diplomatic standards as well as India’s ability to shape international narratives.

Concerns Over Pakistan’s Track Record

Highlighting past incidents, the Congress leader referred to Pakistan’s alleged involvement in cross-border terrorism and its controversial nuclear proliferation record. He noted that these issues had previously led to Pakistan’s isolation on the global stage.

Ramesh contrasted the current situation with the period following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, when India successfully mobilised international opinion against Pakistan. He claimed that such diplomatic effectiveness appears to be missing today.

Criticism of Government’s Foreign Policy Approach

The opposition accused the government of relying heavily on rhetoric while failing to deliver tangible diplomatic results. Ramesh remarked that India’s external affairs leadership is now facing the difficult task of managing what he described as an “embarrassing” situation.

He further stated that despite strong statements made by Pakistani military leadership in recent months, India has not been able to build global pressure against Islamabad. Instead, Pakistan appears to have regained relevance in international discussions, particularly in the context of West Asia.

Debate Over “Broker” Narrative

The controversy also stems from remarks made during an all-party meeting, where the government reportedly rejected the idea of India acting as a mediator and emphasised that the country does not play the role of a “broker.”

Reacting to this, Congress leaders questioned the consistency of the government’s position. They pointed out that India had previously expressed willingness to mediate in other international conflicts, suggesting a contradiction in its current stance.

Government Defends Its Position

During the meeting, government representatives reportedly clarified that Pakistan’s involvement in mediation efforts is not new and has historical precedent, particularly in its engagement with the United States on regional issues.

Officials also stated that India remains actively engaged with global developments and is not silent on the West Asia crisis. According to sources, the government highlighted ongoing diplomatic communication and emphasised that it is closely monitoring the situation.

Focus on Indian Interests in the Region

The government reiterated that its primary concern is the safety of Indian citizens living in the Gulf region, along with safeguarding the country’s energy requirements. Officials indicated that both objectives are being managed effectively despite the ongoing conflict.

However, opposition leaders expressed dissatisfaction with the explanations provided during the meeting. They called for a detailed discussion on the issue in Parliament, arguing that the situation has significant implications for India’s foreign policy and national interests.

Demand for Parliamentary Debate

The Congress has urged the government to allow a full debate in both Houses of Parliament, stating that the evolving situation in West Asia requires transparency and accountability. The party maintains that a broader discussion would help assess India’s diplomatic strategy and ensure that national interests are adequately protected.

As the geopolitical landscape continues to shift, the debate over India’s role and influence in international affairs is likely to remain a key political issue in the coming days.
