Sports – Chhattisgarh is preparing to host the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games, marking a significant step in promoting indigenous athletic talent across India.
The excitement from the recently concluded Bastar Heritage Marathon has barely settled, yet Chhattisgarh is already gearing up for another major sporting milestone. The state will host the first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games from March 25 to April 3, bringing together nearly 3,600 athletes from tribal communities across the country. The event will be held across three key locations—Raipur, Jagdalpur, and Ambikapur—highlighting the state’s ongoing transformation through sports-led development.
A Platform to Showcase Tribal Talent
The upcoming games are expected to provide a nationwide stage for young tribal athletes to demonstrate their abilities. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that the initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of expanding sports opportunities for youth across India. The event aims to create inclusive pathways for aspiring athletes, particularly from underrepresented communities.
Multi-City Sporting Action
Competitions will be spread across different cities, each hosting specific sporting disciplines. Raipur will serve as the main venue for events such as hockey, football, swimming, weightlifting, and archery, along with a kabaddi demonstration. Jagdalpur will host athletics competitions, while Ambikapur will focus on wrestling and the traditional sport of mallakhamb, known for its blend of strength and agility.
Building on Previous Success
The Khelo India Tribal Games follow the success of earlier regional sporting initiatives like the Bastar and Surguja Olympics. These events witnessed a remarkable rise in participation, growing from around 1.65 lakh athletes to over 3.91 lakh. This surge reflects the deep-rooted enthusiasm for sports within tribal communities and the increasing accessibility of organized competitions.
Strengthening Sports Infrastructure
Beyond hosting events, the state government is focusing on long-term development of sports infrastructure. Plans are underway to establish a sports academy in every district, ensuring that young athletes have access to proper training facilities. Additionally, a digital sports database is being developed to track and support talent at various levels.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai described the event as a proud moment for the state, reaffirming the government’s commitment to empowering youth through sports and providing them with national exposure.
Cultural Identity Reflected in Mascot
The official mascot of the games, named ‘Morveer,’ represents a blend of cultural pride and courage. The name combines the words “Mor,” meaning “our,” and “Veer,” meaning “brave,” symbolizing the collective strength of tribal communities. The mascot was unveiled during a ceremony in Bilaspur and has since become a symbol of the event’s spirit.
Natural Strength of Tribal Athletes
Coaches and sports experts often point to the unique strengths of tribal athletes. According to senior football coach Sarita Kujur Toppo, these players demonstrate exceptional discipline and focus, often showing a willingness to follow strict training routines, including limiting distractions like mobile phone usage.
Their physical endurance is another key advantage. Many athletes come from backgrounds where traditional diets—rich in millets, leafy greens, and other natural foods—play a significant role in building stamina and resilience. These dietary habits, combined with active lifestyles, contribute to faster recovery and sustained energy levels during competitions.
