BombDiscovery – Unexploded 500-Pound Device Sparks Alarm in Jamshedpur Area
BombDiscovery – A wave of concern spread across parts of Jamshedpur on Wednesday after a large unexploded bomb was discovered along the Subarnarekha River near the Panipara–Nagudsaai stretch in the Baharagora block. The unexpected find prompted immediate action from local authorities, who moved quickly to secure the area and assess potential risks.

Discovery During Sand Excavation
The device came to light when local residents were engaged in routine sand excavation along the riverbank. During their work, they noticed an unusual cylindrical object partially buried beneath the sand. Sensing possible danger, they promptly informed the police.
Upon inspection, officials observed that the object closely resembled a gas cylinder in both size and shape. However, markings on its surface raised serious concerns. The inscriptions included terms such as “AN-M64 500 lb” and references to American origin, indicating that it could be an old unexploded bomb manufactured in the United States.
Immediate Response by Authorities
Police teams quickly reached the site and established a safety perimeter to prevent any accidental contact with the device. Residents in the surrounding areas were advised to stay away until further examination could be conducted.
Shankar Prasad Kushwaha, the officer in charge of Baharagora Police Station, confirmed that assistance had been sought from the Kalaikunda Air Force Station in West Bengal. A specialized bomb disposal squad has also been called in to examine the object and carry out necessary safety procedures.
Officials emphasized that only trained experts would be able to determine the exact nature, condition, and risk level of the device.
Possible Historical Link Under Investigation
Authorities are exploring the possibility that the bomb may be linked to a past military incident. According to local records, a similar unexploded device was discovered in the same region in 1955. This has led officials to suspect that the current finding could be associated with an old aircraft crash in the nearby Mahuldangri area.
It is believed that if such an incident occurred decades ago, the bomb may have fallen into the river and gradually become buried under layers of sand over time. The recent excavation activity may have brought it back to the surface.
Heightened Security Measures in Place
Given the potential danger posed by the explosive, officials have classified the situation as highly sensitive. Security has been tightened across the affected stretch, with continuous monitoring by local police and administrative teams.
Residents have been urged not to approach the site under any circumstances. Authorities are maintaining strict vigilance while awaiting the arrival of technical experts who will assess and safely neutralize the device.
Awaiting Expert Assessment
The final confirmation regarding the bomb’s origin, functionality, and disposal process will depend on the findings of the bomb disposal squad and defense experts. Until then, precautionary measures remain in force to ensure public safety.
The incident has highlighted the importance of prompt reporting by citizens and swift coordination between local administration and defense agencies in handling potentially hazardous situations.
