Crime – Mother Booked After Child’s Death in Assault Case Investigation
Crime – A 25-year-old woman has been charged under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly failing to report a crime that led to the death of her young daughter.

The case relates to the tragic death of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl who succumbed to severe injuries following a sexual assault. According to police officials, the woman, who is the child’s mother, has now been booked under Section 21(1) of the POCSO Act, which deals with the failure to inform authorities about such offences.
Arrest of Accused and Details of the Incident
Investigators identified the accused as Kalaignar, also known as M Periyanayagam, aged 40. Police stated that he was in a personal relationship with the child’s mother at the time of the incident. Authorities allege that he committed the assault that resulted in the minor’s fatal injuries.
The matter came to light after a postmortem examination confirmed that the child had been sexually assaulted. Based on these findings, the accused was arrested on February 26. Officials further revealed that he held a local political role as an organiser in a youth wing at the union level.
Legal Action Against the Mother
Following the confirmation of the crime, police examined the circumstances surrounding the incident and the response of those involved. During the course of the investigation, authorities concluded that the child’s mother had not informed the police or relevant agencies about the assault in a timely manner.
Under Section 21(1) of the POCSO Act, it is mandatory for individuals aware of such offences against children to report them. Failure to do so is considered a punishable offence. Based on this provision, the woman has now been formally booked, though further investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of her liability.
Concerns Raised Over Handling of the Case
The case has drawn attention from activists and members of civil society, who have raised concerns about how the matter was initially handled. Representatives from social organisations have called for accountability from officials responsible for overseeing child protection and law enforcement in the area.
They have specifically urged district authorities, including the Collector and the Superintendent of Police, to review the actions of local officials. Allegations have been made suggesting lapses in the early stages of the investigation and response.
Action Against Officials and Inquiry Ordered
Amid growing scrutiny, action has already been taken against a police officer associated with the case. The former inspector of Anchetti was suspended earlier in March by senior authorities following preliminary findings.
District officials have confirmed that a detailed inquiry is underway to examine whether there were procedural lapses or negligence by any department or officer involved. The outcome of this inquiry will determine if further disciplinary or legal measures are required.
However, the district administration clarified that the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) did not have a direct role in the events leading to the incident. Officials maintained that their involvement in the case was limited and would be reviewed as part of the broader inquiry.
Ongoing Investigation and Next Steps
Police sources indicated that the investigation remains active, with efforts focused on gathering all relevant evidence and ensuring accountability at every level. Authorities have stressed the importance of timely reporting in cases involving crimes against children, noting that early intervention can prevent further harm.
The case continues to highlight the critical role of awareness and legal compliance in safeguarding children. Officials have reiterated that strict enforcement of child protection laws remains a priority.
