Aviation – Passengers aboard Air India’s New York to Delhi service continue to face extended delays after their flight was forced to land in Ireland due to a technical concern detected mid-journey. The airline is now arranging an alternative aircraft to bring travelers to their destination, with plans underway for a special flight expected to depart on Wednesday.
Emergency Diversion Mid-Flight
Flight AI 102, operated by an Airbus A350-900, had been en route from New York’s JFK Airport to Delhi when the crew identified irregular vibrations during the flight. After approximately six hours in the air, pilots opted to divert the aircraft as a safety precaution. The plane landed at Shannon International Airport in Ireland without incident.
According to sources familiar with the situation, the decision to reroute was taken after intermittent vibration signals raised concerns about the aircraft’s performance. The airline later confirmed that the diversion was precautionary, emphasizing that passenger safety remained its top priority.
Passengers Await Return Journey
A total of 232 passengers and eight crew members have been in Ireland since Tuesday following the unscheduled landing. Air India has arranged accommodation and support services for those affected, ensuring that travelers are provided with meals, lodging, and assistance during the delay.

The original flight was scheduled to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi at around 7:30 pm on Monday after a journey of more than 15 hours. However, due to the diversion and ongoing technical checks, the delay is expected to extend close to 50 hours by the time passengers finally arrive.
As of now, the airline has not released exact timings for the special flight’s departure or arrival. However, preparations appear to be underway to ensure minimal further disruption.
