LPG – Maharashtra Cracks Down on Illegal LPG Cylinder Black Marketing
LPG – The Maharashtra government has stepped up enforcement measures against the illegal sale of cooking gas cylinders, with police action leading to multiple arrests and legal cases across the state.

Authorities confirmed that 18 individuals have been taken into custody, while cases have been registered against a total of 23 people in connection with the unauthorized trade of LPG cylinders. The action follows reports of irregularities in the supply chain, which raised concerns about access to essential fuel for households and institutions.
State Intensifies Monitoring of LPG Distribution
Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal stated that both the state government and district-level monitoring committees are actively overseeing the situation. These teams have been tasked with ensuring that cooking gas reaches consumers without disruption.
According to officials, increased vigilance has been implemented in areas where complaints of black marketing were reported. Authorities are focusing on identifying supply gaps and preventing diversion of cylinders meant for domestic use.
Helpline Launched to Report Irregularities
To address public concerns, the government has introduced a dedicated helpline for citizens. Residents can use this service to report instances of overpricing, hoarding, or illegal resale of LPG cylinders.
Bhujbal noted that the helpline is expected to improve transparency and encourage timely reporting of violations. Based on complaints received, rapid response teams have been deployed to carry out inspections and raids.
During recent operations, enforcement agencies conducted multiple checks, resulting in the registration of cases against those allegedly involved in illegal activities. The arrests were made after evidence of unauthorized storage and distribution was found.
Oil Companies Directed to Increase Production
In an effort to stabilize supply, the state government has also directed major oil marketing companies—including BPCL, HPCL, and IOCL—to enhance daily LPG production. The current output of around 9,000 tonnes is being scaled up to approximately 11,000 tonnes per day.
Officials believe that increasing production will help bridge demand-supply gaps and reduce the chances of illegal trading. Ensuring consistent availability of LPG is considered crucial, especially during periods of high demand.
Priority Allocation for Essential Services
The government has emphasized that the distribution of LPG cylinders will prioritize domestic users as well as critical institutions. These include hospitals, educational institutions, and old-age homes, where uninterrupted fuel supply is essential for daily operations.
Authorities have reiterated that ensuring access for these groups remains a top priority. Measures are being taken to prevent diversion of cylinders away from these sectors.
Alternative Fuel Options Introduced
As part of contingency planning, the state has decided to make alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal available to consumers. This step is intended to provide temporary relief in case of supply disruptions.
Officials indicated that these alternatives would help reduce pressure on LPG demand while ensuring that households and institutions continue to have access to basic cooking fuel.
Ongoing Enforcement and Public Cooperation
The crackdown on black marketing is expected to continue, with authorities maintaining strict surveillance across supply chains. The government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
By combining increased production, monitoring, and public participation, officials aim to maintain a steady and fair distribution of LPG cylinders across Maharashtra.
