Delhi – Mayor Flags Off 48 CNG Trucks to Improve Green Waste Transport
Delhi – Delhi took another step toward improving municipal waste handling on Tuesday as Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh officially launched a new fleet of 48 CNG-powered tipper trucks at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters. The vehicles are expected to strengthen the system used for collecting and transporting horticulture waste generated from parks and green spaces across the capital.

New Vehicles Aimed at Improving Green Waste Collection
During the flag-off ceremony, the mayor explained that the newly added trucks are specially designed to support horticulture waste management operations in all zones of the city. Each vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic tipping system that allows waste to be unloaded quickly and efficiently at designated sites.
According to Singh, these trucks will mainly be used to move green waste from municipal parks and landscaped areas to designated MCD green waste processing centres. The addition of these vehicles is expected to make the collection and transportation process faster and more organized.
Officials noted that horticulture waste, including leaves, grass cuttings, and plant debris, is produced in large volumes across Delhi’s parks and roadside green belts. Efficient handling of this waste plays an important role in maintaining the city’s cleanliness and environmental health.
Funding Support Through Urban Development Fund
The new vehicles were purchased with financial assistance provided by the Union government under the Urban Development Fund (UDF). This funding initiative aims to help urban local bodies improve civic infrastructure and public services.
By investing in specialized waste transport vehicles, the MCD aims to strengthen its capacity to handle horticulture-related waste more effectively. Authorities believe that improving logistics and transportation will reduce delays in waste removal from public parks and green areas.
Municipal officials also stated that better waste management infrastructure contributes to the larger goal of keeping Delhi cleaner and more environmentally sustainable.
Fleet Expansion for the Horticulture Department
The mayor highlighted that the induction of the new trucks will significantly expand the existing fleet used by the MCD horticulture department. After adding these 48 vehicles, the total number of vehicles dedicated to horticulture waste collection will increase to 74.
With a larger fleet available, the corporation expects a noticeable improvement in the efficiency of daily operations. The expanded capacity will help municipal teams cover more areas in less time and reduce the workload on existing vehicles.
Officials also noted that the hydraulic systems installed in the trucks will reduce the need for manual handling of waste. This is expected to improve worker safety while also speeding up the disposal process.
Environment-Friendly Technology and Emission Standards
Another key feature of the newly introduced vehicles is their use of compressed natural gas (CNG) as fuel. Compared with traditional diesel-powered vehicles, CNG trucks produce lower emissions and are considered a cleaner alternative for urban transportation.
The trucks comply with the latest BS-VI emission standards, which aim to reduce air pollution from vehicles operating in Indian cities. Municipal authorities emphasized that adopting cleaner fuel technology aligns with the broader objective of reducing environmental impact while expanding civic services.
To ensure quality and operational reliability, the vehicles also underwent technical verification by experts from IIT Delhi before being deployed.
Officials and Civic Leaders Attend Launch Event
The launch ceremony at the MCD headquarters was attended by several senior civic officials and public representatives. Among those present were Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, Harish Oberoi, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, and the Additional Commissioner, along with other dignitaries.
City officials reiterated that the municipal corporation continues to strengthen urban services in coordination with the Delhi government. They emphasized that improvements in waste management infrastructure remain a key priority as the city works toward better sanitation and environmental management.
The introduction of the new fleet marks another step in Delhi’s ongoing efforts to modernize municipal operations and improve the efficiency of civic services across the capital.
