Officials said the work focuses on stabilising vulnerable sections of the riverbank and improving the city’s drainage network before the monsoon season. The initiative includes stone pitching along river slopes, strengthening embankments, and upgrading access roads used for flood-control operations.
Efforts to Reinforce Vulnerable Riverbank Sections
Authorities explained that the work involves placing stones along the slopes of the riverbank, a method known as stone pitching. This technique helps prevent soil erosion caused by strong river currents and heavy rainfall. By securing the embankments in this way, the administration hopes to ensure that the riverbank remains stable even when water levels rise during the monsoon.
Officials noted that several stretches of the embankment between ITO and Sarai Kale Khan were identified as vulnerable to erosion and damage. Strengthening these areas is expected to improve the overall resilience of the flood protection system in the region.
Upgrading Access Roads for Faster Emergency Response
Another key part of the project involves repairing and widening access roads located along major drains and the Millennium Bund. These roads are essential for maintenance teams and emergency workers who need to reach critical points quickly during heavy rainfall or rising water levels.
Improved road access will allow flood-control personnel to transport equipment more efficiently and respond faster to any potential threats. Officials said this step will also make routine inspections and maintenance activities easier throughout the year.
Drain No. 12 Receiving Special Attention
Approach roads along Drain No. 12 are also being strengthened as part of the broader initiative. The drain plays an important role in directing excess rainwater away from nearby neighbourhoods. However, restricted access in the past often slowed down maintenance work.
With better road connectivity, cleaning operations such as desilting can be carried out more regularly. Authorities said this improvement will help ensure the drain functions effectively during the monsoon season and reduce the likelihood of water accumulation in surrounding areas.
Millennium Bund Project Underway Near Sarai Kale Khan
A significant portion of the work is taking place at the Millennium Bund, located on the right bank of the Yamuna near the Sarai Kale Khan area in South Delhi. The bund acts as a protective barrier that prevents river water from entering nearby residential and commercial zones.
Officials confirmed that stone pitching is currently being carried out along the slopes of the bund to strengthen the structure and reduce the chances of soil erosion. By reinforcing this barrier, authorities hope to provide stronger protection to surrounding areas during periods of heavy rainfall.
Irrigation and Flood Control Department Leading the Work
The project is being implemented by the Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department, which oversees flood management infrastructure across the city. The department is responsible for maintaining drains, embankments, and river protection structures designed to reduce the impact of extreme weather events.
According to officials, the department has been working continuously to upgrade flood-control systems in areas that frequently experience waterlogging. Large-scale desilting operations have been carried out in several drains, while sections have also been widened and deepened to improve water flow.
Addressing Long-Standing Waterlogging Issues
Authorities said many drains in the city had been causing waterlogging in nearby catchment areas for several years. To address this issue, teams have removed accumulated silt, cleared blockages, and taken steps to eliminate bottlenecks and encroachments that obstruct water flow.
These measures are expected to improve the efficiency of the drainage network and reduce the chances of flooding during intense rainfall.
Lessons from the 2023 Flooding
The renewed focus on strengthening riverbanks and improving drainage comes after severe flooding along the Yamuna River in 2023, when several areas remained inundated for days. The event highlighted the need for stronger embankments and better preparedness for extreme weather conditions.
Officials believe that reinforcing the riverbanks, improving drainage infrastructure, and maintaining critical drains will significantly enhance the city’s ability to manage heavy rainfall and rising river levels in the future.
